Pan:core - "Memories (2001 - 2005)"

Piano + electronica + beautiful melodies (9/10) auf diesem album habe ich eine auswahl an tracks zusammengestellt, die ich im laufe der letzten jahre gemacht habe. jeder einzelne von ihnen hat für mich eine persönliche bedeutung. die klangqualität ist eher mittelmäszig und das mixing ist wirklich nicht so gut - und dennoch; ich mag es sehr. vielleicht kann euch das eine oder andere stück berühren. More classical album than other Pan:core's recordings. It mostly comprises of simple but beautiful melodies played on piano / keyboard with electronic background. A very melancholic album. And it includes another stunning electronic cover of a classical tune - this time a piece from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons (17 - spaetsommer). Pan:core's covers are masterpieces. As to the rest of the album, it is very good, but I prefer his more electronic and experimental side, as on No Way To Win. He's a true master of this genre. It becomes clear after listening this album to the end, because the last track is completely different from the rest - it's not a simple piano tune, but hard electronic experimental madness. ;-) I instantly felt sorry that not all 18 tracks were in this style. And a final remark - I like both sides of Pan:core - simple piano pieces and experimental electronic madness, so I don't mind mixing them on one album. But I'm afraid that for some listeners, who like only straightforward music, the ending of this album would be unbearable and could ruin all the fun they had from listening to this record.

Massia, Thierry de - "Shift"

Almost like Beethoven... (6/10) New age très mélodique, les différents morceaux sont tour à tour torturés, mélancoliques, doux ou apaisants. Casque sur les oreilles, yeux fermés, la musique invite à la rêverie. I have mixed feelings after listening to this album. Thierry de Massia is definitely a talented composer. In fact he even can be compared to Beethoven. Like his famous predecessor, he's talented but he must be completely deaf. These cheap synthetic sounds imitate real instruments so poorly that ugliness of the sound kills any fun one could have from listening to nice melodies. In my opinion, Mr. de Massia should limit himself to composing only and give his score to a real band or to a person who is properly equipped and knows how to use synthesizers. As for the tunes, some tracks bear classical influences ("Un signe", "Tales of mister frog", "Shift"). They have very simple melodies, as if composed for children, but could be quite nice if not for those synthetic sounds. In their current form they are practically unlistenable. The other half of songs sounds like transferred directly from the '80s ("La chanson de Julie", "RailRoad", "Jet Set"), straight from the recording session of Jean Michel Jarre. So these tracks are extremely unoriginal, but on the other hand, imitation is almost perfect. In fact "RailRoad" could be advertised as unpublished Jarre's tune from the '80s and I think everybody would believe it. And in these electronic tunes the artist does not try to imitate the classical orchestra and therefore ugly synthetic sounds can be tolerated (in fact they even give this "old '80s" feeling that can be treated as done on purpose). So this part of the album is quite nice if one is not bothered with lack of originality. TAT - "Quinta Essentia"

Good gothic album (7/10) D-SIDE n°32, Emmanuel Hennequin - Septembre 2006: "Les canevas acoustiques et hors classe du projet français TAT conduisent à une première oeuvre autoproduite d'envergure et de grande personnalité, au fil de laquelle s'expriment les voix et instruments de talents divers et variés (parmi lesquels AlBéRiCk de .cut aux mots, et la basse de Cypher d'Omnicore). Les thèmes musicaux investissent des décors acoustiques rituels et mortuaires, parsemés de cloches ("Quinta Essentia : Part 1") mais sans y voir une limite. Et la sévérité des sujets ("Thalidomide", du nom du médicament ravageur) se confronte en permanence à la douceur poétique des cordes classiques. Lacrimosa meets Dead Can Dance meets Einsturzende Neubauten - these are the first associations that came to my mind after listening to this album. But TAT is still quite original. For example, use of a classical guitar gives a very interesting effect. Dark ghotic tunes - very haunting. The only downside is the terrible French accent in English songs. Strong debiut (7/10) industrial, classical, and pop all come together with this new 'virtual band' known as try^d. with members in seattle, ohio, and japan, try^d music is created entirely over the internet. most members have never met in person. try^d includes vavrek, ema, and arna from seattle on lead vocals, rjmarshall from japan on keyboards, and john holowach as the band's producer. I started my adventure with Try^d with their third album "Listen". I was completely mesmerized and shocked by the quality and beauty of this album. Their debut "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)" is of course weaker than "Listen" but this is still beautiful music for every fan of triphop or atmospheric rock/pop. I have one complaint - I don't like the voice of the singer on "The Final Rewind". But apart from that - great job. I gave 7 points, but that's only because this album is followed by "Listen". Really great ambient (8/10) This album was kind of an experimental in 1997. It was never released until now. Some of you have maybe heard the Enharmon in some of my gigs. Once again, thanks to Al Cabaro being with me in these studio sessions as a mental help and co-drinker. And thanks to all my friends for just being there all the time. Please sit down in a peaceful corner, take a deep breath, relax and press play. This is a really great album. I recommend it to every fan of the darker side of ambient. I also recommend it to people who think this is a boring genre. It sometimes happen - with bad ambient albums. DJ Blackwidow - "North Star"

Very good, creative electronica (9/10) This album was composed January 2006 - August 2006. I was on a creative high after finishing up the BlackJaq CD with my collaborator. I really went into this CD with an idea to create a more straightforward electronica sound. I kept some of the ethnic influences and added elements of space music and chanting (listen for Catholic and Ba'hai faith chants). If Leaving Town was a more personal album, then this one is more broad in it's mission. Some aspects are cold, while others seem personal, yet at a distant. The song, Jupiter, was originally composed in October 2005 and was originally written to be a new track on the original BlackJaq Cafe CD. The song, Again, features my BlackJaq collaborator, DJ Jax and this song is actually a special remix created exclusively for this release. The song 2012 was my highest and longest charting song on AcidPlanet. It was also the most reviewed and downloaded song I've ever released on the site. This is the first time this album has been released in its entirety. Thank you for your support of my music. This album is dedicated to my dad. He was the one who inspired the title song. It distracts attention from the music itself. Nevertheless, I encourage you to check it out, because as I said the quality of this recording is still very high and it can appeal to you, if you are an ambient fan and inclusion of speeches is not a disadvantage for you. FusionArt - "Details"

Very good trip hop (8/10) Another solid series of deep sounds from Absys Records stable. This time, however, drum & bass gives way to a different type of music, usually defined broadly and encompassing genres like idm, ambient, breakbeat or dubstep, but at the same time always well-acknowledged by similarly different listener environments. We’re talking about “Details” LP – the newest album by the Polish producer collective known as FusionArt. Recently there have been some changes in the group – the producer duo has been joined by MC Susiah whose role is to soften the otherwise rough and austere tracks with her soft but spirited vocals, thus supplementing the already coherent whole by additional intriguing details, as it is the case with the deep, slightly metallic “Believe” or the dreamy “Details”.

Rather calm electronica with instrumental part based mainly on breakbeat with some traces of dubstep and downtempo. The half of the album includes female vocals, adding to the dreamy atmosphere and justifying placing this work under trip hop label. Highly recommended to fans of intelligent calm electronica.

SaReGaMa - "Spirits Of Ancestors" [EP]

Very fine dark ambient (8/10) Slow meditative soundscapes inspired by Native American culture. Spirits of Ancestors EP was selected for the soundtrack of OCEAN OF AN OLD MAN - an award-winning film that represented India at International Film festivals in Pusan, Cairo and Breda. 3 additional tracks that were composed especially for the film are available here. The audio quality of music offered on Jamendo in best case reaches 190 kbps, which is quite reasonable for evaluational purposes but definitely not enough to experience the richness of original sound (1411 kbps). If you'd like to feel how this music sounds for real you can obtain a lossless FLAC versionof this album on my website. This album is slightly different than other SaReGaMa's works - that is for sure. But, firstly, different does not mean worse. This recording is of equal very high quality. And secondly, this difference is not so big. Therefore, in my opinion, there is nothing to justify the harsh and dissapointed review of KraftiM and people who agreed to his review. KraftiM's arguments are absurd when one takes into consideration that he likes other works of SaReGaMa. He was nearly put asleep? This album is far more varied and dynamic than e.g "Bodhi Tree". It is "darkish experimental"? What a crime! Is it bad to experiment? Should all SaReGaMa's albums be identical? Is all dark music bad, simply because it is dark? Should all tunes in the world be full of pink fluffy bunnies and shiny happy faces? THIS would surely put ME asleep. KraftiM complaints about "annoying crickets"... Hello, anybody home? Aren't sounds of nature one of the most common and widely used features of ambient music? The tuba-like flute fits the other elements perfectly. And so on... So, to sum up, this is a very successful attempt at creating slightly more dark music, in accordance with the title. When you close your eyes you can almost feel those spirits gathering around you, which is the clearest evidence that SaReGaMa succeeded in what he had planned. Thank you for sharing your beautiful music. One thing I don't like is the fourth track, but the reason is it is too short, so the tune doesn't last long enough to develop properly and listeners don't have enough time to feel the mood. Hoffmann, Michael - "Ruff-Stuff Edition"

A massive dose of experimental ambient (9/10) RUFF-STUFF Edition is a documentation of live-sampling experiments, which I produced in 2009 on a period of 12 months. All tracks are pure improvisations by using live-sampling work and were occasionally grafted by carefully additions (add. Instuments, Efx, mixing). I pondered for a long time how to review and rate this album - over 5 hours (!) of experimental improvised ambient. It is hard to comprehend, it is hard to listen in one take. It requires a lot of attention to catch the subtleties of particular tracks, which all are slow-paced, quiet and drum-based. For people that don't have much experience with such music it would be probably a torture. Of course, its inaccessibility for general public should not influence an opinion on music as such. So what is my opinion? I'm still not sure. I guess you won't be very surprised if I write that it's too long and it'd profit from some selection of the recorded material. However, you'll probably be very surprised when you read that I'd delete only three tracks. In all the rest the artist somehow managed to include enough interesting ideas or to produce fine disturbing atmosphere to keep my attention focused. This fact only deserves the highest praise, because it requires a true genius to improvise such massive dose of ambient music without making it boring or too repetitive. One must also have a lot of courage to publish such unconventional work. On the other hand I won't give the highest rating just because of the qualities of the artist himself. This is a review of music, not of the artist's talent as such (which is - without any doubt - enormous). I also won't rate the originality by itself, just like I refused to lower the score because of inaccessibility. What truly matters is if it is good music, enjoyable (in a broad sense of the word) and worth of repeated listening. The answer is of course "yes", but at the same time it is not perfect recording for me. I truly appreciate the artist's mastery as well as novelty and originality of this work, but I cannot give full 10 points. Anyhow, this is an exceptional album and should be on a "must-listen" list of every true fan of ambient. Not catchy enough (6/10) electric-acoustic-singer-songwriter-lo-fi-indie music written by a person in his room by touching strings, using vocal cords, arranging samples, clapping hands, hitting bottles and so on... This is simple dreamy guitar pop rock. This is a professional recording and will find its fans for sure. For me, however, it is not catchy enough to keep my attention focused. KraftiM - "JamatriX"

Nice ambient (8/10) Musictrade info: Jamatrix is the second full album release on Musictrade from the Dutch experimental electronica artist and sound architect KraftiM. The Jamatrix project was based on samples collected from five artists who all are releasing their music on the French Jamendo website. From each source track six samples were distilled and subjected to a thorough processing treatment, resulting in a matrix where each of the six KraftiM tracks uses material from five selected samples, one from each of the contributing artists. These are the contributing artists and their works being sampled: The Abogix (J.K.): "I dreamed... Keiner, Fabio - "Heavy Waters II"

Extremely calm dark ambient (9/10) all tracks are remixes and reworkings of free samples provided by JOVICA (www.freesound.org) with best regards and many thanks to jovica storer! This is extremely calm and quiet ambient. Totally orthodox (that is - completely devoid of rhythms). I usually don't like such music, as it is often boring - I think it is very difficult to make such music interesting. But Mr. Keiner succeeds. His method of keeping the listener's attention focused is to break long quiet drones with very disturbing, dark sounds. It introduces a disturbing atmosphere to the whole recording, 'cause you listen carefully thinking what lurks around the bend. It's like a sonic version of a scary horror movie. Well done!

Villiers, Jacques de - "Sleepsongs"

Very calm ambient (4/10) This album was self-released by the young artist from South Africa - Jacques de Villiers. 49manekinow and online distro series tries to help with promotion of interesting underground music. Sleepsongs is a short album filled with sleepy, minimalistic, warm drone / ambient and piano sounds. Great soundtrack for past Valentine day. This is very very calm music. Too calm for my taste. It's so slow and quiet that it's just boring. Only for dedicated fans of orthodox ambient. The album has been released by the 49manekinow.net netlabel and is available for downloading at archive.org in mp3 format.

Van Syla - "Death of a Star, the"

Wow! There are so many musically deaf people around here... (1/10) A very weak attempt at electronic piano ambient. The tunes are primitive (with a catastrophic climax in the horrendous title track). They could maybe work as a soundtrack for Teletubbies or as background music in a hotel's elevator, but that's all. Then we have orchestration. The artist totally loses his grip when it comes to combining more tracks in one piece (see "The Death of a Star" again). Particular instruments do not form a cohesive whole, but rather fight with each other for supremacy. Pure piano pieces with only subtle synthesizer background are better (see "Passing Passion", the best on this album - I'd give it something like 5/10 rating). And finally, the biggest crime of Van Syla - use of primitive cheap keyboard with terrible plastic sound (or lousy samples on computer). It renders this album almost unlistenable for someone with even traces of musical hearing. There's nothing wrong with plastic sound, where it fits - where the artist deliberately goes for synthetic sound (see the whole 8bit genre, for example). But in such Oldfield-like music that Van Syla tries to record it does not fit at all. All these background effects that accompany piano are supposed to add space and atmosphere to the main piano melody. To achieve this they would have to sound natural. You cannot substitute a plastic bucket for a tubular bell, just because it is hollow. And you cannot substitute $20 Casio keyboard for real instruments, nature sounds and field recordings. It can be done with synthetic sounds, but it is really really difficult. It requires good equipment and high skills. Van Syla lacks at least one of them. Of course, piano on this album is probably also synthetic, but it sounds better (as usual). I don't know the reason - either piano is easier to mimic or keyboard makers have more experience, but they usually more or less succeed even in cheap equipment. The effect is almost never as atrocious as with other instruments or sounds. But maybe I am insane? As you can easily see this album is highly praised by the masses. So, can they all be wrong??? Well, it seems for many people the simple melody is everything they need (and the simpler and more primitive the better). These tunes could be written by a talented graduate of a two-week correspondence harmony course (or - these days - by a good computer program). That's OK with me, even if I don't dig it. Many genres feature primitive melodies (check out eurodance, for example) and may still be fun, if done properly. But festering this particular genre with cheap synthetic sounds is a crime (like it would be with classical or early music). That is something I cannot understand or accept. So, to summarize, if your favorite musical genre is nursery rhyme and you think you wouldn't notice if Mike Oldfield replaced tubular bells with steel barrels on his debut album – Van Syla is waiting for you with plenty of beautiful music. If not – for Mozart's sake, stay away! The album has been released on Jamendo and is available for downloading in mp3 or ogg format.

Hoffmann, Michael - "Luminous" [EP]

First class ambient (8/10)

If you can trust Brian Eno, then ambient has the capacity to put the listener into a different, not necessarily existent environment just by the use of sound, and to acoustically confront him with new sensations of space. Even though carrying on with this tradition, Michael Hoffmann breaks some more modern ground soundwise on his first solo-ep on iD.EOLOGY. Minimalist is how he goes about when bit by bit, the penumbral monstrous steel-construction of an abandoned industrial ruin appears in the mechanical monotony of resonating feedback-loops and stolid muffled beats. Debris of clanging metal and crumbly noise cover the ground, the walls of the corroded workshop answer each step with a multiple echo. Very slowly a harmonic crescendo illuminates the room, bathing it in the sunny glow of warm, comforting pads and touching it with the soft summer breeze of glittering arpeggios. What you are normally likely to encounter during an arts-performance, is what this ep achieves solely by means of sound. So creating and changing environments, generating and conveying new sensations of space is possible in a different way. But who would ever have doubted that you can trust Brian Eno.

First class ambient. The artist is very accomplished, so this EP is flawless from the technical and production side. Each piece is very creative, full of different ideas, so it never gets boring, like so many bad ambient works. I gave it "only" 8/10, because it doesn't fit my taste perfectly, as it is slightly too calm and smooth for my liking. But it shouldn't discourage you in any way from checking this overall great recording.
