Nymphomania - "Unashamed"

Dark ambient of the highest quality (10/10)

From the artist:
Earthy meditation loops of processed voice, bass guitar and wind chime, which resound unceasing throughout my new home by the woods. An album for eating nectarines and grapefruits in the early morning. The sequel to "In Spiral Expression".
From the label:
This is a real trip into mind. The fractal image of the inner self. A kaleidoscope of visions that have a meaning, but you should be sure, because taking the wrong path leads you nowhere. The labyrinth built by one's mind may look confusing, but it gives the hints - just listen. And never touch that green switch!

All instruments programmed and played, vocals, music written and arranged by Josh Landry. Artwork by Mike Winchester.

Dark ambient of the highest quality. With long drones flowing slowly through time and space. Only sometimes strange sounds of ethnic instruments or tribal chants remind you that you are taking part in some kind of a primeval ritual.

This record is hypnotic and repetitive, but never boring like so many bad ambient works. Highly recommended to both ambient fans and people looking for a good introduction to this genre.

The album has been released by the artist himself through his Bandcamp store under the "name your price" scheme. You can download it there in a variety of formats, including a lossless FLAC version. This release is copyrighted.

It has been also reissued by the Russian label USC (United Studios Corporation), under the Creative Commons BY-SA license. On their website you will find links for downloading the album for free from several file storage websites, but only in 320 kbit MP3 format. They inform that "By downloading our files from links below you directly support artists and label". By the way - they release music on physical CDs too.

KraftiM - "BackVieW"

Too ambient for me (6/10)
Hmmm... It's definitely an interesting effort, but somehow it doesn't appeal to me. I liked the following tracks: 1 Danik; 2 Caragon & 8 Fratatag. The others were:
a) too experimental (5 BiLena - I hated backward recitations mixed with a classical melody here)
b) too ambient and calm (6 Drong - not much is happening throughout the track - IMHO the artist failed to create the mood and atmosphere - the result is boring)
c) uncreative (7 Adaschu - a Schubert's cover without any interesting idea for changing the master's work).

Ambient seems to be an easy genre, but in my opinion it's one of the most difficult, because there is only a thin line between meditation and sleep. It requires a great talent to be able to measure silence, repetitions and long static passages in such way that the listeners fall into a state of ecstasy and not into a coma.

KraftiM chose the right ingredients on three tracks, so he is definitely an artist to be watched.

Of course, if one is a dedicated fan of ambient in any form, he may love the whole album. It is a professional recording, not an amateurish demo.

Keiner, Fabio - "Heavy Waters II"

Extremely calm dark ambient (9/10)

all tracks are remixes and reworkings of free samples provided by JOVICA (www.freesound.org)
with best regards and many thanks to jovica storer!

This is extremely calm and quiet ambient. Totally orthodox (that is - completely devoid of rhythms). I usually don't like such music, as it is often boring - I think it is very difficult to make such music interesting. But Mr. Keiner succeeds. His method of keeping the listener's attention focused is to break long quiet drones with very disturbing, dark sounds. It introduces a disturbing atmosphere to the whole recording, 'cause you listen carefully thinking what lurks around the bend. It's like a sonic version of a scary horror movie. Well done!

Mikrodepresja - "Static Improvised Soloworks For Non-input Mixer Vol. 1"

Boring glitch-based ambient (3/10)

Non-input mixing board improvised series vol. 1 is a new simple logic project. For one day in one week mikrodepresja will be prepared a few pieces of improvised live electronics based only at non-input mixer feedbacks, glitches, failings and defects. No mix, no mastering no re-recordings, cut-up's etc. Pure, static non-input mixing board noises and drones.
LISTEN LOUD! or WITH HEADPHONES (also loud)!

The owner of the netlabel 49manekinow that publishes Mikrodepresja here must really hate this band. The previous album was packed in a password-protected rar archive (sic!). This one is in wma format. :-/
If you don't like this band - just drop them! ;-P

As for the music - this time at least it is possible to listen to them. And it's nothing special, unfortunately (now I understand why the previous album was password-protected ;-> ). It is simple ambient, based on noise and glitch. Totally boring, without any creative ideas, like a recording session of some equipment tuning. Don't waste your time.

On second thought, if you're a dedicated fan of noise/glitch, you can check it out. But I am able to find interesting works for me also in this genre. But not this one.

Nuoh - "Roztarte w pyl"

Boring drone ambient / noise (1/10)

With great, great pleasure we would like to recommend newest NUOH release. This is music which tell stories you wouldn’t like to hear.. Experimental, Minimalistic Tape music at the highest level. Those records was made in fall of 2003, we think it's a great soundtrack to weather maelstorm in Poland.

Boring drone ambient / noise. At least boring for me, as it is not my favorite genre. Still, I find some works appealing. But not this time, so it is only for dedicated fans of the genre. Others will fall asleep quickly.

Bring Me The Head Of Orion - "Colossus"

Dark guitar ambient (8/10)

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Bring Me The Head Of Orion offers a musical experience as large as the state itself. This music contains a sprawling, open-ended quality that confounds expectations by being simultaneously evolutionary and completely static. The formal architecture is built on simple, clear cut melodic ideas and a minimalist type repetition that moves from idea to idea with a refreshing clarity. Depending on your point of view, you might consider the sonic result to accompany the beginning of the world or its end. As or myself, I relate more to it as a soundtrack to the eschaton, and frankly would be worried as to what type of world would produce these sounds from its point of origin. [Read more --->]

Quite interesting dark & heavy guitar ambient (it's not electronica!). Mostly distorted guitars, drums and keyboard drones. And gloomy atmosphere.

De L Afront - "433"

Repetitive ambient (4/10)
433 - the second ep of our friend from france (De l afront) it`s an over 10 minutes of sad, melancholic, dark, droney electronics and ambient sounds which will take you for a trip in the darkest secrets of your mind.
This music is a perfect soundtrack for an black theatre play and it realize its role in Molotov theatre. The young artist one more time proves that the experimental sounds from france are on the highest level.

Dark ambient mixed with noise, full of drones. Unfortunately quite boring and repetitive.

B - "StrawberryClock is the King of the Portal 2"

Almost as strange as Kokkaljos' nickname (7/10)

A crazy blend of experimental ambient and noise. What? Ambient and noise at the same time? I know it sounds crazy and crazy it is. Just listen for yourself.

Oh, did I mention that it is completely crazy? I did? Well, because it really is. Yet somehow it is powerful. If someone likes crazy music, of course. It would be perfect for a soundtrack to the next sequel of "Saw". Or "Hostel". Or another crazy horror movie.

Oh, one more thing. If you dig it, do not try to listen to his albums recorded as Kokkaljos. They are not good. Very not good. I know that now you'll do exactly the opposite, but you have been warned. My conscience is clear.

Nie, dziekuje - "EP 1"

Two good tracks (6/10)
What does drummer do when he is fed up with hammering on hides? He became an enginer of space travels... in a walking tempo. How much does the devoid drums ambient-experimental heaven of MichaƂ Witkowski offer? You will find it out right now. If people are stars, then the space is crowded is in places. There are also nebulas of calm and pianos of emptiness. The first walk from the second is separated by four deep breaths. Because in autumn the rhythm is unnecessary to stroll.

The tracks no. 1 & 2 are very good experimental electroacoustic post rock tunes. Unfortunately the tracks no. 3 & 4 are worse. No. 3 sounds like poor people's Moonchild by King Crimson. And no. 4 is an example of very boring ambient. But tracks 1 & 2 are worth listening. Check them out.
