Therapy? is an outstanding hard rock / metal band from Ireland. Influenced by such stylistically diverse bands as Black Sabbath or Hüsker Dü they managed to build their own distinct sound, based on a wall of noise constructed from loud guitars and powerful drums on the one hand and melodic vocal lines, catchy tunes and clever emotional lyrics passionately delivered by the singer Andy Cairns on the other hand. A concert bootleg is probably not the very best start if you do not know Therapy? yet, in which case I encourage you to check out the albums Troublegum and Infernal Love, but should be interesting for every fan of this great band. The highlights of this album are rare songs Auto Surgery and Totally Random Man coming from an early EP, a poem by A.A. Milne sang a capella, a crazy cover of the Black Sabbath's Iron Man with the changed lyrics, an early version of Me Vs. You - again with different lyrics and finally extended Lunacy Booth with an insane speech of Andy Cairns. This release of the 1994 Firenze concert has been compiled from two separate sources: 1. "Shock Treatment" [bootleg CD, Octopus Octo 010] 2. "Iron Man" [bootleg CD, On Stage Records CD/ON2339] The first source had inferior sound quality, but it included 2 more songs. Therapy? is an outstanding hard rock / metal band from Ireland. The final vocal line on Infernal Love might be "There is a light at the end of the tunnel," but there's no denying that Infernal Love is anything but optimistic; it's an unrelentingly dark and sometimes bluntly turgid record. Anyone familiar with the band had grown accustomed to Andy Cairns' spins on depression, anger, bitterness, and self-destruction, but even the most devoted listener probably screamed "Snap out of it!" while first listening to this third record. Darker chords and slower tempos prevail, and the pop-punk hooks are all but washed away. The sequentially buried, bouncing "Loose" is an anomaly, sounding like a refugee from Troublegum that reads like a dystopian "Jack and Diane." Other than that, it's nothing but despair and heartache. "Lonely, Cryin', Only" comes from the Semi-Detached album and it was released on A&M Records on May 18, 1998. This single reached number 32 in the UK Singles Chart. Semi-Detached is not the best album by Therapy? and "Lonely, Cryin', Only" is not the best song on this album. Still, it leaves many contemporary rockers' efforts behind. But forget the single track - you can find it on the regular album, anyhow. The B-Side tracks are much more interesting and should be more than enough for a fan to get this single. "High Noon" is a cover of the song by DJ Shadow, a prominent DJ and electronic music artist. It sounds like a typical Therapy?'s song, while still being faithful to the original and catchy as hell. Narcis - "Shining"

Quite good mixture of grunge, punk, metal & pure rock (6/10) Narcis, groupe alternatif de la scène alsacienne, a écumé bon nombre de concerts dans l'Est, se forgeant une solide expérience (première partie d'Eiffel à la Laiterie, festivals divers) avant de s'éteindre en 2002... Il était formé de Manu (Guitare-chant), Nico (Basse-chant) et Sam (Batterie)... Cette page Jamendo est donc pour vous, auditeurs, afin que ce groupe ne tombe pas dans l'oubli, et qu'il garde une trace sur la toile de son activité à travers les deux albums proposés ci après. Le premier, eponyme (surnommé le "poisson rouge"), date de 1999, le second, Shining, est beaucoup plus abouti et montre les reelles orientations du groupe, entre Smashing, Nirvana et autres groupes des 90's... Quite good tunes. One thing I didn't like much, were vocals, especially on track no. 2, which is almost unlistenable. But all the others are definitely worth listening. I would especially recommend tracks 01 (really great riff here) & 08 (instrumental, with a catchy semi-oriental melody). Mediocre achievement (5/10) Il est là... servez vous. ecoutez le, critiquez le, aimez le, detestez le. Mais surtout, dites le. Ici, maintenant. Good technical skills are not always connected with a composing talent. The tunes on this album are just average - the band plays exactly the same as thousands other nu-metal bands nowadays. So the result is rather boring, because you are not surprised with anything. A solid work without the soul. I also have to mention drums, which are particularly bad, with overwhelming annoying hi-hat in front. Yuck! Slightly better than average: 1 Bonanza 2 Koto le satellite 6 Z.2 (this one is only a small electronic interlude - but a surprisingly good one)

Religionnaire - "Religionnaire V: Des Calques Aux Manies"

Mediocre '70s rock (5/10) La genèse ainsi que la maturation foetale de Religionnaire s'effectue sur un fond sonore 70's oscillant particulièrement entre le The Kick Inside de Kate Bush et Atom Heart Mother de Pink Floyd. La redécouverte de ces deux albums 20 ans plus tard va non seulement se transformer en révélation, mais également influencer la base de son inspiration. The album lacks interesting melodies, the voice of the singer is not interesting, ballads are quite boring, there is too much borrowing from the stars of the '70s. The best tracks are: 1 Des Calques... 2 Oui J'Aime le Rock, Progressif (obvious copying of Led Zeppelin style of writing) 5 Bandicapé 9 Religionnaire (one more proof that the artist is far better in aggressive hard rock than in pop rock ballads - see track 6 Olga - completely terrible, although the name is beautiful) 13 ...Aux Manies Oh, I almost forgot about the biggest disaster - a track no. 10 Come Again, which is a rock version of the famous Adagio by Albinoni. Eclectek - "Groove On"

Their works were interesting from the very beginning (these old albums have been unfortunately removed from Jamendo), but they work hard and with each new album they cross new borders. And I really like where they are heading. They started with very eclectic :) mixture of rock, electronica, hip-hop and funk. But on this two-track minialbum they step deeper into the realm of rock music. And they really should feel at home here. Both tracks are outstanding - highly energetic, with strong aggressive female vocals and ultra catchy melodies. Their rock is spiced up with electronica, but in perfect proportions, without turning their music into some campy electroclash shit. The bands that immediately come to mind are Guano Apes and Skunk Anansie. Do not get me wrong; I do not bring these names as a claim of unoriginality - everybody has some influences. I just want to tell you two things: one - what type of music you can expect, because "rock" is too general and "alternative rock" is not only an extremely stupid, but also a meaningless label; and the second - they already reached the level of these bands. This is not some amateurish effort rated "10/10", because it is "good for non-professionals" (the usual argument of bad artists complaining on low ratings). This recording gets "10/10", because you could mistake it for a new Skunk Anansie's single. This is how good it is. My only complaint is a usual one in such cases - IT IS TOO SHORT! I WANT MORE! Modern hard rock masterpiece (10/10) Gli Ex Animo, nella nostra ancora attuale formazione, nacquero nel 2004 e già dall’inizio del 2005 cominciammo a scrivere svariate canzoni, con l’intenzione di trovare un sound che fosse di nostro gradimento, fra le sonorita’ pesanti del metal (Metallica, Disturbed, Slipknot, System Of A Down) e quelle delle canzoni piu’ dirette in pieno stile hard rock (Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters) tenendo molti gruppi come fonti di ispirazione, anche di generi e periodi molto lontani fra loro. Tra le nostre prime canzoni, si rivelarono in seguito molto valide “Free” e “What I Need” grazie alle quali incanalammo poi una serie di successi in diversi festival e concorsi. The most popular tag that journalists use for such music nowadays is "nu metal". I hate this label because it is meaningless and stupid - what "nu" would tell the listener in year 2030? So let's say this is just a hard rock album heavily influenced by metal and grunge. This work should be attractive to fans of such bands as Disturbed or Godsmack. Especially Disturbed can be pointed as a very direct influence. This is not bad though, as not every one is able to come up with breakthrough achievements. We need also talented artists who can successfully build upon the grounds discovered by their predecessors. And Ex Animo have built a massive fortress here. This is a flawless work, catching your attention from the first sound. It is full of great melodies, power and energy, decent instrumental and vocal work from all the band members, powerful riffs. Production is good, the vocalist is able to deliver English lyrics with a very good accent (for my non-native ear, of course, but so many non-English bands fail so miserably at this point that even my ears hurt). I won't mention any particular songs, because they are all top quality. This is definitely the best hard rock album I found on Jamendo to this date. GO GET IT ASAP!

Chujawiacy - "Demo EP"

Nice hard rock tunes with bad lyrics (5/10) This could be a good hard rock EP with industrial feel to it. The melodies are quite catchy, with disturbing depressive atmosphere; production is decent. The main downside of this record are lyrics. They are very strange and surreal, which is not bad by itself. However, associations used in these lyrics just don't work - at least for me. They are very original though. This is still an interesting effort and you can check this out if you like strange "alternative" music. The best track is no. 05 "Garnizon". [Artist's Myspace]

Rebolt - "Made In Spite" [EP] (bonus edition)

Nice hard rock EP with two unnecessary bonuses (6/10) «Made In Spite EP» is Rebolt’s first official release. It includes four original hard hitting rock tunes in the rock/metal vein. This is the bonus version, with two songs recorded in 2007. Despite their mixed backgrounds, the members of the Norwegian band came together for one single reason: The love for old fashioned heavy metal and hard rock! The songs featured on their debut EP is a humble batch of rock’n’roll which has got both soul and playfulness written all over it. In short, it is an honest attempt to make the audience dig up their air guitars and put their pedals to the metal (although rather not at the same time!). It was the guitar riffs and solos, the big choruses and the unpretentious joy of bands such as AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Iron Maiden which lead to the foundation of Rebolt during the winter of 2004. The band had previously recorded two four-track demos under the ad-hoc name of Powerage back in 2004 and 2005. Although they were both crammed with impressive tunes, the sound quality of these early recordings left much to be desired. This time around there were much more studio time at hand, a fact which without doubt reveals itself on the refined finished product. The guitar sounds better than ever, the drums are solid and powerful, the bass is dense and rocksteady and the shining vocals are as dynamic and energetic as they are on stage. The sum of it all is a cliché, but still spot on: this is hard hitting as hell!

It's extremely conservative classic rock. No traces of originality here. But the band knows how to play, they are very energetic and full of enthusiasm. They do not discover new lands or cross any borders, but if you like classic rock, you should enjoy their recording. The tracks 2 & 3 are the best, the first track is the worst, because it is too obviously crafted with the charts in mind.

This time energy and technical skills does not compensate for complete lack of originality. The more so, their energy seems to be almost exhausted. They are fast and loud but somehow I felt like they were tired and the music lost its power and charm.

However, if somebody likes classic hard rock just because it's hard rock and is not discouraged by the album's derivativeness, he can check it out.

Rebolt - "Promo 2007"

Typical hard rock (5/10) These are two songs we recorded for the local compilation "Hits Out Of HiT" in April 2007. "SAM" is sort of a tribute to the sci-fi show "Stargate SG-1" and the character of "Samantha Carter" and the arrangement pays more tribute to basic hard rock of Danko Jones than the old school stuff, even though Danko himself also pays tribute to the same old heroes as ourselves. "Lemmy" is in fact one of the first songs we ever wrote back in 2004 and appeared in an early version on our 2004 demo, "You Should See Us Rock". You could see this song also as a tribute, to Lemmy in Motörhead, but it is also a statement from a "straight guy" that shares the equal passion of rock'n'roll as Lemmy, even though he doesn't drink as much and has tattoos all over his body. The song "Lemmy's Heart" is present in the ski movie "Kong Vinter 4 - The Lost Hygge" released in November 2007. Check it out! www.bigtrix.com

Celibatfighters - "Envol, l'"

Mediocre achievement (5/10) Ce "groupe" de 2 musiciens et d'un supporter ont un but commun. Exprimer leurs émotions à travers la musique et leurs textes. Véritable auteurs compositeurs, ils aiment faire partager leurs créations, tantôt mélancoliques, tantôt complètement délirantes. Laissez vous tenter par leur musique et abandonnez vous aux CELIBATFIGHTERS!!! This is not a bad recording. These guys are generally skilled, they know how to play their instruments, singing is acceptable, although sometimes their performance lacks confidence. The same could be said about production. Most of the time it is OK, sometimes it could be better. My main problem is with melodies, which don't appeal to me. The two exceptions are no. 6 "Ne reviens pas" and no. 09 "Fin de la vague" - these are quite catchy. I can't speak French, so I can't say anything about lyrics. Maybe they are exceptionally good, what usually rises the rating, even if the music isn't particularly attractive. Having access only to the musical side of this work, I cannot judge it higher. InDePeNdEnCiA - "Estacao Independencia" [EP]

Quite a progress since debut (6/10) This EP contains three re-recorded songs taken from the previous album and one brand new track. The recording shows a significant progress since the debut. Quality of production is acceptable this time, allowing a listener to appreciate the decent instrumental work and quite catchy (sometimes) and energetic hard rock punk-influenced songs. Unfortunately, it also reveals true weakness of the vocalist, who spoils what his colleagues have accomplished. Nevertheless, taking into consideration the progress already made, this is a promising act. InDePeNdEnCiA - "InDePeNdEnCiA"

Very amateurish rock (4/10) Some compositions show some potential (tracks nos. 02 & 04 have quite catchy melodies, I guess), but very bad production, ugly sound, weak vocals and limited skills of the band waste it all. They have some interesting ideas (like, for example, use of Pachelbel's "Canon in D" played on synthesizer as a background for "Tanto Faz", or adding electronic samples here and there), but implementation of these ideas is just hopeless. Learn and work hard guys, and maybe... in a distant future...? For now, this album does not qualify for repeated listening. The album has been released on Jamendo and is available for downloading in mp3 or ogg format.
