Nice hard rock tunes with bad lyrics (5/10)
This could be a good hard rock EP with industrial feel to it. The melodies are quite catchy, with disturbing depressive atmosphere; production is decent. The main downside of this record are lyrics. They are very strange and surreal, which is not bad by itself. However, associations used in these lyrics just don't work - at least for me. They are very original though. This is still an interesting effort and you can check this out if you like strange "alternative" music. The best track is no. 05 "Garnizon". [Artist's Myspace] |

Tuta, Jakub - "Fuck Me"
|
Good compositions - bad production (6/10)
Jakub has a composing talent - his tunes are catchy and atmospheric and would be great. Unfortunately, he lacks production skills. Completely. He has a lot to learn, before his songs will be fun to listen. As for now, bad production kills all the fun, so 6/10 rating is all I can give. So learn hard, dear Jakub, or hire a producer. Oh, some progress can be seen already - this time he at least managed to mix channels properly. |

Vaka Foam - "Scary Winter" [EP]
Mixing rock with electronica still rulez (8/10)
Drum & bass heavily influenced by rock and industrial. I guess the style is called "hardcore techno" or "breakcore". But who cares for such detailed labeling? Let's say it's a distorted guitar (or guitar samples) wreaking havoc on some electronic background. Interesting samples, creative compositions, great mix. Cool industrial atmosphere. I'm off headbanging. See ya! |

dK - "Electroglamour And Infinite Sadness"
Zuppa Romana (6/10)
I've got mixed feelings after listening to this album. What are "mixed feelings"? There is this popular joke: "mixed feelings are when you're watching your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new Ferrari". Well... Maybe. But for me it's also "hearing great music spoiled by a bad singer with a terrible English accent". Why on Earth so many people feel they have to sing in English, even if they lack skills? Somebody kidnapped your mother-in-law and threatens to throw her off a cliff, if you start singing in your native language? Ooops! Bad example. Anyhow... Everything else, apart from the vocalist's work, is at least good on this album. Great dark atmosphere, catchy melodies, very fine distorted guitars, nice electronic effects put in just right places. Just listen to these three instrumental pieces: 06, 08 & 12. Very interesting dark electronica, isn't it? Only maybe production is not up to par on several tracks, but not below my level of tolerance. And then... the singer. His voice is weak and from time to time he is almost out-of-tune. I could tolerate it, if this was his only problem. But the true disaster is his English accent. Why not to sing in Italian? Somebody told them only italo-disco is permitted in Italian? OK, the sound of English is great, it is an easy language to sing and write lyrics, but it makes sense only if the vocalist is able to learn a decent accent! Otherwise, just stick with your native language and the effect will be infinitely better. Because for now, it's just "Zuppa Romana". Of course, I can recommend this album to people who don't know English, or are unable to hear differences in English accents, because the instrumental part is very good. What's the genre? A dark synthpop / electro with industrial feel to it - a mix of Depeche Mode and Oomph! for me. By the way, speaking of Oomph!... Somehow they are not ashamed to sing in German. Instead of embarrassing themselves with "Änglisch"... Apart from Jamendo, you can also download it directly from the artist at Bandcamp for free or for a donation in a variety of formats, including lossless FLAC version. Strangely, this release is governed by a different CC license: |

Etherdust - "At Someone Else's Funeral" [EP]
Average electronic industrial (6/10)
Quite a mediocre effort. The tunes are catchy, but bad production, mixing, uninteresting vocals and complete lack of originality ruin the positive impression. Nevertheless, if it is only the first demo of a new still-learning band, this project may develop into something interesting. But for the time being they sound like a Stabbing Westward cover-band. More detailed comments: 1 "Before It Breaks Down" - it's the worst track on this EP, mostly because of the poor mixing. The sound of cymbals that can be heard from about 1 minute into the track onward is fully placed in the left channel instead of being mixed in stereo. This is very annoying effect - I almost felt like listening to the first faulty stereo recordings from the sixties. Very unprofessional. This track differs from the other two by being strictly electronic and instrumental. It's a disadvantage, because both the melody and the electronic effects are monotonous and uncreative. 2 "Take My Place" - it's a typical Stabbing Westward's tune. Even the vocalist's voice and his manner of singing copies the SW vocalist. The one thing that interferes with enjoying this (and the third) track is bad production and unselective sound. 3 "At Someone Else's Funeral" - definitely the best tune on this album. The band managed to build really great atmosphere here (almost like on "What Do I Have To Do?" by SW). Nice piano, too. Unfortunately, the above objections still apply. [Artist's Website - Beware!
