Peszek, Maria - "Maria Awaria" (2008)

Maria Peszek is a highly acclaimed Polish singer/songwriter. She is considered to be controversial, especially by right-wing retards and tabloids, because she is not afraid to openly discuss - both in lyrics to her songs and in interviews - themes such as sex, faith, patriotism and mental diseases. Each of her three albums was a commercial success, at the same time being praised by the critics and receiving many awards in her native Poland. She sings exclusively in Polish. Maria Awaria (Maria the Failure) is a loose concept album about sex, love and femininity. All lyrics are in Polish and they are really good, witty and powerful, being an important factor in making these songs as awesome as they are. Therefore, this album may not appeal to non-Polish speaking public, as some tracks are built around lyrics with musical background playing only a small part ("Milosc w systemie Dolby Surround", "Reks", "Ladne slowa to"). Nevertheless, I still encourage you to check this album out, because many other tracks are brilliant from the musical side too (e.g. "Rosol", "Hujawiak", "Maria Awaria", "Muchomory"). From the musical perspective this is a pop (or pop rock) record, with some jazz and modern electronica influences. The album is masterfully produced by one of the best Polish producers and electronica composers, Andrzej Smolik, so the said musical background is full of pleasant surprises on many occasions. Many of Peszek's vocal lines are catchy as hell too and should be enjoyable even without understanding of her lyrics. Maria Awaria To zdecydowanie najbardziej kobieca i erotyczna płyta na polskim rynku od czasów... Hmmm... No właśnie, takiego albumu jeszcze w kraju nad Wisłą nie było. Maria Peszek na swoim drugim krążku odkrywa przed słuchaczami swoją kobiecą naturę. Bez zażenowania śpiewa o tym, że "dla własnej wygody zapuszcza swe ogrody i kolekcjonuje wzwody". Zdradza też swoje swoje erotyczne fantazje. Zachęca kochanka do lizania, solenia i miętolenia swego drobnego ciała. Z niemal fotograficzną dokładnością opisuje również style współczesnych kobiet, które z jednej strony "chude, wysokie z wydepilowanym krokiem", a z drugiej mogą być kurami domowymi. Odkrywa też swoją romantyczną duszę i w piękny, metaforyczny sposób (swoim delikatnym aksamitnym głosem) śpiewa o tęsknocie. I od razu zapewniam: mimo różnych – może kontrowersyjnych – stwierdzeń teksty nie są wulgarne, nie przekraczają cienkiej granicy dobrego smaku (choć się do niej niebezpiecznie zbliżają). Jeszcze słowo o samej muzyce, za którą odpowiedzialny był Andrzej Smolik. To miks przeróżnych styli muzycznych: od delikatnego, transowego, nastrojowego trip-hopu i chilloutu pełnego "powietrza" i ciepłych muzycznych plam, przez nieco jazzujące swingi, altarnatywnego retropopu, po elementy starego rocka z lat 60-tych. Tryad - "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)"

Strong debiut (7/10) industrial, classical, and pop all come together with this new 'virtual band' known as try^d. with members in seattle, ohio, and japan, try^d music is created entirely over the internet. most members have never met in person. try^d includes vavrek, ema, and arna from seattle on lead vocals, rjmarshall from japan on keyboards, and john holowach as the band's producer. I started my adventure with Try^d with their third album "Listen". I was completely mesmerized and shocked by the quality and beauty of this album. Their debut "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)" is of course weaker than "Listen" but this is still beautiful music for every fan of triphop or atmospheric rock/pop. I have one complaint - I don't like the voice of the singer on "The Final Rewind". But apart from that - great job. I gave 7 points, but that's only because this album is followed by "Listen". FusionArt - "Details"

Very good trip hop (8/10) Another solid series of deep sounds from Absys Records stable. This time, however, drum & bass gives way to a different type of music, usually defined broadly and encompassing genres like idm, ambient, breakbeat or dubstep, but at the same time always well-acknowledged by similarly different listener environments. We’re talking about “Details” LP – the newest album by the Polish producer collective known as FusionArt. Recently there have been some changes in the group – the producer duo has been joined by MC Susiah whose role is to soften the otherwise rough and austere tracks with her soft but spirited vocals, thus supplementing the already coherent whole by additional intriguing details, as it is the case with the deep, slightly metallic “Believe” or the dreamy “Details”.

Rather calm electronica with instrumental part based mainly on breakbeat with some traces of dubstep and downtempo. The half of the album includes female vocals, adding to the dreamy atmosphere and justifying placing this work under trip hop label. Highly recommended to fans of intelligent calm electronica.

Laufer, Daniel - "In Between" [EP]

Very good electronica (7/10) If you like to support the artist, you can buy this album for a few bucks on Bandcamp (with slightly better quality). However, if you prefer to get it for free, you can still download it here. It's your choice, really. Enjoy the music. Very good electronica - nice melodies, good sounds. The only thing I don't like is track no. 6 "Shadows Of The Past". The singing is very very weak, with a terrible accent. I would recommend the author limit himself to instrumental music or hire a different singer. If you like trip-hop and/or downtempo - check it out. Z.o.Z. - "Morfina"

Not bad, but not very interesting either (5/10) Mix of rock, trip hop and post rock with Polish lyrics. It's not bad, but at the same time not attractive enough to keep my attention focused. They claim they like to experiment, but I didn't hear many experiments on this album. I didn't find catchy melodies either. Lyrics? Correct, but forgettable. Vocals? Your ears won't hurt but nothing more. Gloomy atmosphere? Present, but I wasn't carried away. To sum up: if you like the genre, you can check it out, but don't expect a masterpiece. Various Artists – "Music For Danny DeVito"

What a brilliant idea! (9/10) This time Mixgalaxy Records made a special compilation for Mr. Danny DeVito. Why? Because nobody have never done this to him before. At least officially. We sorta didn’t know what kind of music he prefers so we’ve set up a tracklist of a wide variety of genres for him to pick from. We decided that making it a private release would be unfair to our listeners so you all are very much welcome to give this record a listen and share it with your friends of course. It’s an easy bet to say that for Mr. DeVito all the names here are new, however for our regular listeners this release is once again a mix of old timers (even including Jacobo – a raggae-dub side project of Sinestesia) and a couple of guest artists which we would like to present. Meet Abel Mariam from San Jose, California, USA who contributed an opening track and meet Russian-Norwegian duo Zunzagi which consists of sound producer Sergei from Tomsk and singer Julia from Oslo. And finally welcome Without Time band form Grodno, Bealrus. So, as you can expect from Mixgalaxy Records it’s a nice one hour set of high quality tracks fluctuating from deep ambient, easy listening and folk-pop to electro-house, breakbeat and even hip-hop. And if by any chance you are an acquaintance of Mr. DeVito – make sure to pass him the link, that will do us all a big favor.

This is a very good compilation of songs by independent artists. It is very diverse stylistically, ranging from various genres of techno and electronica, through hip hop and pop up to rock. So I guess everyone would find here something of interest. Mr. DeVito included.

I liked 10 tracks out of 16, which is not a perfect, but still very very decent, score. While some songs are first class records, there are a few, which are below average for me. However, I'm giving this compilation one additional point for the brilliant surreal concept of making this album as a gift for the great actor Danny DeVito. I love this kind of humor. And this hilarious cover - guys from Mixgalaxy Records totally rule.

I won't elaborate on bad tracks for a change. Let's focus on the good ones this time:

02 - Grosse - Mousy Cheese Song
A funny parody (I hope so ;-) ) of an acoustic rock ballad - vocal line is comprised of "la la la" sang out-of-tune over an acoustic accompaniment.

03 - Cubic - Unded
Another not fully serious recording. Looped kitschy sounding trumpet as a leading tune for some electronica. Funny and catchy.

04 - Zunzagi - Empathy
Classy trip hop / pop. Nothing too original (like the most of trip hop), but very atmospheric and catchy, with nice dreamy vocals and good accompaniment.

06 - Bear and Lampshade - Witch Hunt
Great breakcore. Don't miss this one!

07 - Gipa - Mad Electric Dog
Very good creative techno / electronica.

08 - PiXtar - Space Adventure

With the experimental warmth of '60s French films and the pizzicato flavor of horizontal hip-hop, Simon Green's Bonobo project established the welcome niche of a pretension-free, post-party intellectual chillout. [Read more --->] With his third proper album as Bonobo, Simon Green has done what all artists aspire to do: take a bar you've already set high with your previous outing (in his case, 2003's Dial M For Monkey) and show significant progress. Days to Come very well might be the most listenable album to be released this year. Bonobo is easily labeled as down-tempo, but this should not be mistaken for some Buddha Bar/Mushroom Jazz compilation throwaway. Days to Come is complex, orchestrated music from a man who has moved well beyond his 2001 debut, Animal Magic (Tru Thoughts) to create an album that successfully blurs the line between a programmed and live sound.
