Massia, Thierry de - "Shift"

Almost like Beethoven... (6/10) New age très mélodique, les différents morceaux sont tour à tour torturés, mélancoliques, doux ou apaisants. Casque sur les oreilles, yeux fermés, la musique invite à la rêverie. I have mixed feelings after listening to this album. Thierry de Massia is definitely a talented composer. In fact he even can be compared to Beethoven. Like his famous predecessor, he's talented but he must be completely deaf. These cheap synthetic sounds imitate real instruments so poorly that ugliness of the sound kills any fun one could have from listening to nice melodies. In my opinion, Mr. de Massia should limit himself to composing only and give his score to a real band or to a person who is properly equipped and knows how to use synthesizers. As for the tunes, some tracks bear classical influences ("Un signe", "Tales of mister frog", "Shift"). They have very simple melodies, as if composed for children, but could be quite nice if not for those synthetic sounds. In their current form they are practically unlistenable. The other half of songs sounds like transferred directly from the '80s ("La chanson de Julie", "RailRoad", "Jet Set"), straight from the recording session of Jean Michel Jarre. So these tracks are extremely unoriginal, but on the other hand, imitation is almost perfect. In fact "RailRoad" could be advertised as unpublished Jarre's tune from the '80s and I think everybody would believe it. And in these electronic tunes the artist does not try to imitate the classical orchestra and therefore ugly synthetic sounds can be tolerated (in fact they even give this "old '80s" feeling that can be treated as done on purpose). So this part of the album is quite nice if one is not bothered with lack of originality. Troy - "Best Music For Sex"

Strange techno / electronica (5/10) TROY a fine disco-new age-industrial one man band is located in Tel aviv Israel. A rather tiring effort from the Israel-based one-man act. The main problem that I have with this album is bad production / mastering. All the tracks sound like they have been recorded through a concrete wall. Very flat ugly sound. In terms of genre, the album is quite diverse, exploring various styles of electronic music with an experimental approach and a retro feel to it. Therefore, it is difficult to label it otherwise than by using general terms like techno, electronica, disco, sometimes even synthpop. Several tracks are quite entertaining and listenable, despite the terrible sound. Others are simply dull. You can check it out if you like exploring techno wilderness. Grâce à un chanteur franco-allemand, un batteur britannique d'alliance et deux "frenchies", HYPE est riche tant par ses origines que par ses influences.

Le groupe qui a déjà 2 EP à son actif, s'est forgé une solide expérience "live" en défendant ses titres avec rage sur les plus prestigieuses scènes de la capitale (Elysée Montmartre, Maroquinerie...).

Association with REM is obvious. But I do not say these guys are plagiarists. I say that to get them people's attention. They just explore a similar area of rock music and the vocalist has a voice resembling that of Michael Stipe. I will not be original either, saying that I agree with everybody that "My Innocence" is definitely the greatest song on this album. But I will say more - it is so awesome that it would be high on any list of the greatest rock hits of all time - if only more people had a chance to listen to it.

Apart from REM, several tracks remind me of Live and I think Hype is even more similar to Live than to REM. Especially with regard to "My Innocence", but also "Anybody here", which is almost as good as "My Innocence". Both songs could be placed on "The Distance To Here" right beside "The Dolphin's Cry" and nobody would notice any difference in quality. In my opinion Hype has a potential for a big career - not only in France but on international scale.

And one more thing - how stupid one has to be to rate the music album by the quality of the cover? Maybe such people should move to the graphical arts website? So, 10 points for "My Innocence" and "Anybody here", 7 points for the rest. Overall: 8,5. I must choose 8 or 9 when rating, so I choose 9 - those two songs are REALLY great. Check them out - it is free, remember? And also check out their second album "Just A Catwalk From Heaven", especially track no. 2 "Ain't That Far". One more precious gem.

Subterrestrial - "Goddess of Atvatabar, the"

Interesting but too repetitive dark ambient (6/10) The debut album from this San Francisco Bay Area artist, The Goddess of Atvatabar is inspired by the 1891 hollow earth adventure novel by William R. Bradshaw and leans heavily on dark ambient, tribal ambient and middle eastern musical themes. The Goddess of Atvatabar is a self-released web album and is available as a free download. This is an interesting dark ambient recording, although too repetitive for my liking. I like experimenting with dark atmosphere and strange sounds. The drawbacks are the said repetitiveness and absurd sound volume differences, forcing a listener to adjust the level throughout the album. For me the best tracks are nos. 01, 02 and 07, because they are not overly repetitive. If you like highly repetitive type of ambient, you can safely add 2 or 3 points to my rating. I guess using a word "repetitive" in every sentence, when reviewing a repetitive album is somehow repetitive, I mean, is somehow OK, isn't it? Apart from Jamendo the album is available at archive.org on Subterrestrial's own "netlabel" channel - possibly in better quality, because Jamendo is notorious for very low quality of their mp3 files. Dolores O'Riordan meets P.J. Harvey (9/10) Album a tendance accoustique mettant en avant l'harmonie du chant et les textes. I love the way everything is mixed on this album - an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, great percussion work, a Jew's harp, great female vocals, traces of jazz, instrumental improvisations. Oh, and one more thing - this whole "folk" thing. This album has nothing to do with folk music. Use of an acoustic guitar and a Jew's harp does not turn something into folk. Melchiades Estrada Band, the - "Music of Youth"

Simple, catchy, too long (6/10) Album de jeunesse. Toutes les musiques présentées ici ont été composées entre 14 et 19 ans par The Melchiades estrada Band. The return of the '80s. Most of the tracks are nice - simple but catchy. But for me the album is too long - not all the tunes are equally interesting and somewhere around the 16th track one gets slowly bored. However, this album proves that you do not need expensive equipment to make great electronic music. Of course, you can hear from the first second that it has been made on a home computer from the '80s. And so what? The sound is not everything. The melodies, the feeling are usually more important. Celibatfighters - "Remise en ordre"

Lack of interesting melodies, too eclectic (5/10) Second album d'une longue série: Plus guilleret, il mêle une grande partie de nos influences musicales. Parlant des choses qui nous entourent, qui nous font rire, pleurer et nous énervent. Cet album est moins intime mais reste très proche de notre état d'esprit. I was not too pleased with this recording. It lacks interesting melodies and is too eclectic. Eclecticism must not be a bad thing, but only if it is a planned action. Eclecticism on this album seems to be a result of a coincidence: "we somehow succeeded in composing some songs, so here they are". Also technical skills and quality of recording of some of these tunes are questionable (e.g. 03 Qu'est ce qui m'arrive?). Only two tracks are better than average: 1 Aller simple - a very dark and moody tune with an interesting melody; 10 Bande a part - a light acoustic guitar song with a funny melody. Very amateurish rock (4/10) Premier opus: Nostalgique et mélancolique, il vous plongera dans les moments de réflexion et de rêverie d'un célibataire sans pour autant être pessimiste et depressif. majoritairement acoustique, entre piano et guitare, certains morceaux sortent du lot pour retrouver des coups de gueules et des pures moments de délire. Xenophobe - "Episode 2"

One of the best bands you have never heard of (8/10)

2nd CD of 4 track recordings mastered to digital compact cassette. Transfered to CD by Brian Lipski in 1997 Very interesting recording supposedly featuring electronic reworking of music by Warfare, a metal band from the 80-ties, completely unknown to general public. Warfare's Myspace profile (yes, they have one!) says they were: "Thrash band from the Jersey shore in the mid 80's. All songs recorded live at band practices through headphones onto cassette..."

If this is true, it is another proof that talent hunters at the record labels are deaf and you need just a massive luck to be accepted. Why? Because these songs are great.

Of course even in these reworked versions you can hear the limitation of the poor equipment and recording conditions. But what counts is that they are catchy and energetic and if these guys were given a chance, they could easily turn them into metal masterpieces.

OK, but what about these updated versions? Well, they are still merely of a demo quality, because they were recorded in the nineties on cheap analog equipment. Yet these tunes are so well crafted that I enjoyed them very much despite their extremely lo-fi sound. The album starts with an earthquake - an industrial metal riff of the first track "Mad". Equally powerful is the third track "Dawn Of Time". No. 4 is a little slower, as to make some room for handful of strange samples. No. 5 "Phat and Funky" seems to contain a vocal line by Les Claypool of Primus, although the album's description does not mention that. Maybe it's someone else perfectly imitating his voice, though it feels unlikely, when you know how distinct Claypool's voice is. So anyone thinking of using this music commercially, should take double care, because it may contain some copyrighted material.

From the track no. 6 the arrangements change from industrial metal into synthpop / new wave, but keeping their main feature - catchiness. Another stylistic change comes in track no. 9, where we meet hip hop, followed by rap metal in the next tune. In track 11 we go back to metal. The album ends with two crazy renditions of "Wild Thing" (probably still copyrighted too!).

The only weak track is no. 2 "Acoustic Song" - with a primitive melody, and low quality plastic-sounding samples (not that electronic sounds in other tracks are of exceptional quality, but in this one they are truly terrible).

To summarize - this album is a true gem and I recommend it to anyone ready to listen to very good music in not so good quality.

Diablo Swing Orchestra - "Butcher's Ballroom, the"

Sell your souls, people - it really pays off (10/10) The Diablo Swing Orchestra dates back to 1501 in Sweden, where history tells the tale of an orchestra that played like no other. With music so seductive and divine that the ensemble overwhelmed audiences all over the country, and people from all social classes took them to their hearts. Their performances rapidly earned a reputation of being feral and vigorous and gained the orchestra a devoted crowd that followed them around. [Read more --->] Some time ago I decided to check out some albums from one of the Jamendo's popularity ranking lists. A disclaimer: I am fully aware of the fact that due to the constantly broken stats these lists do not tell a thing about true popularity of the albums - it's more or less just a random list. Still, some popularity is required to get there, so I was curious what else can be found there quality-wise, as I know one really terrible record that haunt these lists. I probably shouldn't bother writing this review, as others wrote everything before me. But I just have to write how totally amazed I am; I can't keep it to myself - it's unbearable. I chose Diablo Swing Orchestra's "The Butcher's Ballroom" mainly because of the great cover and because it said it's metal and you don't find many good metal albums here, so I became tired of all these electronic tunes.

And metal it is. But what kind of metal! Not some rusty iron but true gold. First of all, these guys spice up their mainly heavy metal music with influences coming from each musical genre known to man (and several more coming straight from outer space). A recipe for disaster? Yes Sir! So, do they fail? No! I don't know how they do it (selling souls to the devil obviously comes to mind), but they succeed. They can include opera singing, ethnic instruments, classical instruments, nature sounds, growling, electronic samples, super-heavy guitars and jazzy passages within one track and it all works. You don't feel it's too eclectic, you don't feel it's chaotic. You don't feel some elements don't fit. Instead, you think: "I never thought metal could sound like that but it is perfect". And it is true. Everything is perfect on this album - singing, skills of the musicians, professional production, ability to write super-catchy and powerful tunes. The level of awesomeness of this work is inhuman (the devil comes to mind - again). It is unbelievable that such recording is given here for free. Diablo Swing Orchestra should receive a highest praise for that. Because the place of this album is right beside Metallica on the shelf labeled "thrash metal" (OK, now Metallica plays pop, but their old albums should still be there), right beside Apocalyptica under "classical metal" label and replace Nightwish in the "best of opera metal" ranking. Speaking of Nightwish - I was never a fan of combining metal with opera singing, as it usually doesn't work. The band plays their part, the poor woman screams for her life in the front and their efforts don't correspond in any way. It almost always sounds like two radio stations trying to jam each other on the same band - one with opera music and one with heavy metal. The result is embarrassing chaos. And here we have a miracle (or the devil's work) - I suddenly realized I love opera metal! Under condition that it's played by Diablo Swing Orchestra. To summarize - it doesn't matter whether you're a metalhead or a fan of opera or classical music. If only you like good music - you just have to check out this recording, because it is a landmark album that should be praised as one of the greatest works in the history of heavy metal, being at the same time surprisingly accessible for people that don't listen to this genre. PS. Considering the quality of this album, they had to sell not only their own souls, but also those belonging to their families and friends (maybe even some of the neighbors). The devil that signed the deal obviously must have got a big raise from the Satan with month-long all-inclusive vacation in Heaven. [Artist's Myspace]

Laufer, Daniel - "In Between" [EP]

Very good electronica (7/10) If you like to support the artist, you can buy this album for a few bucks on Bandcamp (with slightly better quality). However, if you prefer to get it for free, you can still download it here. It's your choice, really. Enjoy the music. Very good electronica - nice melodies, good sounds. The only thing I don't like is track no. 6 "Shadows Of The Past". The singing is very very weak, with a terrible accent. I would recommend the author limit himself to instrumental music or hire a different singer. If you like trip-hop and/or downtempo - check it out. You can also obtain a lossless FLAC version of this album from Bandcamp for as low as 4 euros. [Artist's website]

Ex Animo - "Sentience"

Modern hard rock masterpiece (10/10) Gli Ex Animo, nella nostra ancora attuale formazione, nacquero nel 2004 e già dall’inizio del 2005 cominciammo a scrivere svariate canzoni, con l’intenzione di trovare un sound che fosse di nostro gradimento, fra le sonorita’ pesanti del metal (Metallica, Disturbed, Slipknot, System Of A Down) e quelle delle canzoni piu’ dirette in pieno stile hard rock (Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters) tenendo molti gruppi come fonti di ispirazione, anche di generi e periodi molto lontani fra loro. Tra le nostre prime canzoni, si rivelarono in seguito molto valide “Free” e “What I Need” grazie alle quali incanalammo poi una serie di successi in diversi festival e concorsi. The most popular tag that journalists use for such music nowadays is "nu metal". I hate this label because it is meaningless and stupid - what "nu" would tell the listener in year 2030? So let's say this is just a hard rock album heavily influenced by metal and grunge. This work should be attractive to fans of such bands as Disturbed or Godsmack. Especially Disturbed can be pointed as a very direct influence. This is not bad though, as not every one is able to come up with breakthrough achievements. We need also talented artists who can successfully build upon the grounds discovered by their predecessors. And Ex Animo have built a massive fortress here. This is a flawless work, catching your attention from the first sound. It is full of great melodies, power and energy, decent instrumental and vocal work from all the band members, powerful riffs. Production is good, the vocalist is able to deliver English lyrics with a very good accent (for my non-native ear, of course, but so many non-English bands fail so miserably at this point that even my ears hurt). I won't mention any particular songs, because they are all top quality. This is definitely the best hard rock album I found on Jamendo to this date. GO GET IT ASAP!

Hoffmann, Michael - "Ruff-Stuff Edition"

A massive dose of experimental ambient (9/10) RUFF-STUFF Edition is a documentation of live-sampling experiments, which I produced in 2009 on a period of 12 months. All tracks are pure improvisations by using live-sampling work and were occasionally grafted by carefully additions (add. Instuments, Efx, mixing). I pondered for a long time how to review and rate this album - over 5 hours (!) of experimental improvised ambient. It is hard to comprehend, it is hard to listen in one take. It requires a lot of attention to catch the subtleties of particular tracks, which all are slow-paced, quiet and drum-based. For people that don't have much experience with such music it would be probably a torture. Of course, its inaccessibility for general public should not influence an opinion on music as such. So what is my opinion? I'm still not sure. I guess you won't be very surprised if I write that it's too long and it'd profit from some selection of the recorded material. However, you'll probably be very surprised when you read that I'd delete only three tracks. In all the rest the artist somehow managed to include enough interesting ideas or to produce fine disturbing atmosphere to keep my attention focused. This fact only deserves the highest praise, because it requires a true genius to improvise such massive dose of ambient music without making it boring or too repetitive. One must also have a lot of courage to publish such unconventional work. On the other hand I won't give the highest rating just because of the qualities of the artist himself. This is a review of music, not of the artist's talent as such (which is - without any doubt - enormous). I also won't rate the originality by itself, just like I refused to lower the score because of inaccessibility. What truly matters is if it is good music, enjoyable (in a broad sense of the word) and worth of repeated listening. The answer is of course "yes", but at the same time it is not perfect recording for me. I truly appreciate the artist's mastery as well as novelty and originality of this work, but I cannot give full 10 points. Anyhow, this is an exceptional album and should be on a "must-listen" list of every true fan of ambient. Mediocre synthpop (5/10) Après plusieurs réalisations (notamment 2 mini-albums), jalonnant notre progression depuis nos débuts (2003), nous avons acquis la matûrité et l'assurance d'un style qui nous soit propre : le son HP... nous avons alors jugé bon de composer de tous nouveaux morceaux pour les intégrer dans un projet de plus grande envergure et sortir un album à l'image de notre formation : sincère et libéré ! Track 10 (Night sky) is also not so bad. But the others are weak. They are dominated by a disco beat, very unoriginal. Orchid - "Takk!_Soundsampler"

Excellent dreamy pop rock (9/10) Orchid was founded in January 2006, in Poznan - a city in a mid way between Warsaw and Berlin. After we have made our debut as a part of a nationwide charity action known as Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy we played several gigs in Poland. Our music goes easy with the rockandroll. It is mostly simple, melodic, sometimes schmaltzy. It meets the electronics, but not very modern, rather vintage. We do rockandrol, special FX included. Contact: (cell) +48 510 549 762 orchidtheband@gmail.com Excellent dreamy pop rock. And I don't say that because I'm the Pole myself, but because of the quality of this recording. I'm the last person to praise work of others, if it's not really worth it. So my rating doesn't mean "9, because they come from Poland and they're young" but "9, because you can put it right beside Portishead's or The Cardigans' albums". Pros: - catchy melodies (but not primitively commercial), - great dreamy atmosphere, - beautiful female voice, - not bad English accent. Cons: - production. The voice is without any sense hidden in the background. Sometimes it's even hard to hear the lyrics (especially on "Moreless"). - drums. Monotonous cymbals, which in addition are louder than the vocals ("Moreless" again), distract attention from otherwise great tunes and after a while become really tiring. Overall, the pros seriously outweigh the cons. Despite the small drawbacks, this is the finest pop rock album I heard in months. And it is infinitely better than everything that Polish branches of the majors excreted from their rotting bowels and labeled as Polish pop rock, in years. The highlights: 1 moreless - catchy, sexy melody, great piano. 2 call to the past - the best on this album. Smash hit. Beautiful melody sang beautifully. 5 mess - starts surprisingly with an old-fashioned keyboard but then contemporary guitars join with a nice melody. But it is a chorus that is really mesmerizing with a haunting vocalise. It reminds me of the great vocalise from the Polish classic movie "Pociag". Uncertainty Principle - "Bathe In The Black Sun" [SP]

Nice doom atmosphere, but too repetitive (7/10) "The Nulll Collective" is a group of like-minded artists from around the world who are sick of commercialism and artistic conformity in both the world at large and in the microcosmic wasteland of underground extreme music. Through NULLL Infra, the NULLL collective will periodically release their music as free downloads. These tracks are all previously unreleased and will also be made available on CD. The April Infra release brings a long-awaited massive droning funeral dirge from Uncertainty Principle. Multiple guitar layers guide you to the surface of the black sun, and beyond. This is a drone-based instrumental doom metal song. I like this genre and I quite enjoyed this work. But I can see its shortcomings. The tune is too repetitive - lack of vocals doesn't help here. Instrumental pieces require a little different style of writing, as to compensate for the lack of a vocal line. Usually, one of the instruments is brought to the front, playing a distinct melody, the purpose of which is to substitute the singer. Here we have only a long wall of drones, which may soon become boring for a listener who is not a dedicated fan of the genre. Not much is changing or happening throughout the (very long) track. Finally, production sucks a little bit. The sound is not selective, what adds to the tiring effect of this work. Nice melody spoiled by an unnecessary disco beat (6/10) Utwór instrumentalny - klimatem nawiązujący do muzyki francuskiej i klimatu Paryża. Nagrałem go w 1994 roku, a teraz ponownie w nowej wersji. It could be a very nice instrumental piece. Unfortunately, a catchy melody played on accordion is spoiled by adding an unnecessary and ugly disco beat.
