Peszek, Maria - "Maria Awaria" (2008)

Maria Peszek is a highly acclaimed Polish singer/songwriter. She is considered to be controversial, especially by right-wing retards and tabloids, because she is not afraid to openly discuss - both in lyrics to her songs and in interviews - themes such as sex, faith, patriotism and mental diseases. Each of her three albums was a commercial success, at the same time being praised by the critics and receiving many awards in her native Poland. She sings exclusively in Polish. Maria Awaria (Maria the Failure) is a loose concept album about sex, love and femininity. All lyrics are in Polish and they are really good, witty and powerful, being an important factor in making these songs as awesome as they are. Therefore, this album may not appeal to non-Polish speaking public, as some tracks are built around lyrics with musical background playing only a small part ("Milosc w systemie Dolby Surround", "Reks", "Ladne slowa to"). Nevertheless, I still encourage you to check this album out, because many other tracks are brilliant from the musical side too (e.g. "Rosol", "Hujawiak", "Maria Awaria", "Muchomory"). From the musical perspective this is a pop (or pop rock) record, with some jazz and modern electronica influences. The album is masterfully produced by one of the best Polish producers and electronica composers, Andrzej Smolik, so the said musical background is full of pleasant surprises on many occasions. Many of Peszek's vocal lines are catchy as hell too and should be enjoyable even without understanding of her lyrics. Maria Awaria To zdecydowanie najbardziej kobieca i erotyczna płyta na polskim rynku od czasów... Hmmm... No właśnie, takiego albumu jeszcze w kraju nad Wisłą nie było. Maria Peszek na swoim drugim krążku odkrywa przed słuchaczami swoją kobiecą naturę. Bez zażenowania śpiewa o tym, że "dla własnej wygody zapuszcza swe ogrody i kolekcjonuje wzwody". Zdradza też swoje swoje erotyczne fantazje. Zachęca kochanka do lizania, solenia i miętolenia swego drobnego ciała. Z niemal fotograficzną dokładnością opisuje również style współczesnych kobiet, które z jednej strony "chude, wysokie z wydepilowanym krokiem", a z drugiej mogą być kurami domowymi. Odkrywa też swoją romantyczną duszę i w piękny, metaforyczny sposób (swoim delikatnym aksamitnym głosem) śpiewa o tęsknocie. I od razu zapewniam: mimo różnych – może kontrowersyjnych – stwierdzeń teksty nie są wulgarne, nie przekraczają cienkiej granicy dobrego smaku (choć się do niej niebezpiecznie zbliżają). Jeszcze słowo o samej muzyce, za którą odpowiedzialny był Andrzej Smolik. To miks przeróżnych styli muzycznych: od delikatnego, transowego, nastrojowego trip-hopu i chilloutu pełnego "powietrza" i ciepłych muzycznych plam, przez nieco jazzujące swingi, altarnatywnego retropopu, po elementy starego rocka z lat 60-tych. Too ambient for me (6/10) BITTE SPENDET FUER MENSCHEN DIE AN TOURETTE ERKRANKT SIND! JEDEN CENT WIRD VON MIR AN DIE HILFSORGANISATION "CANNABIS PATIENTEN GERMANY" WEITERGELEITET! Necronomicon-the book of all evil! Tja,was gibt's da noch zu beschreiben? Reinhören und die Geisterbahnfahrt kann loshegehen! Ach ja,das Cover wurde auch diesmal wieder von WarMock ...diesmal aber in zusammenarbeit mit mir selbst gemacht...also ich machte die Teufelsfratze auf dem Buch das auf dem Cover zu sehen ist...ja und der rest,der grossteil übernahm dann wieder mal der gute WarMock! Thank's Amigo! Of course Master Abogix never goes below the certain (high) level. However, this album is too ambient for me - saying ambient I mean calm and monotonous. Not much is happening throughout some tracks, apart from the diabolic speeches - what is another drawback for me. I am definitely not keen on including speeches in musical tunes. It distracts attention from the music itself. Nevertheless, I encourage you to check it out, because as I said the quality of this recording is still very high and it can appeal to you, if you are an ambient fan and inclusion of speeches is not a disadvantage for you. Nikila - "Short Tracks"

Another masterpiece from the Queen of Electronica (10/10) This album is a part of the project Vacui Spacii, launched by Martin Eschoyez. I used here material from tracks i already released, recycled material from tracks i didn't upload and new tracks i composed for this project. I also used samples from The Freesound Project Ulterius is a re-mix of a phon's track End [...] The idea is that the concepts attached to music inspire other artists to manipulate and reinterpret, recreate or destroy them to generate new audiovisual works. The idea is to release not only the concepts but the works, the materials they were made with, the typography, the music. The idea is to free them for exploring the potential of shared knowledge and inspiring others to wonder about this freedom. When all is said and done, everything comes from an empty space : the feelings, the sound waves, the pencil movement and its traces, the experimentation on a grid of voxels which, in the end, is just an empty space on a digital canvas. Royalty-free music for professional licensing

It's very diverse electronica of superb quality. Almost everything is perfect on this album - crystal sound, the quality of samples, mixing, the melodies. All sounds so fresh and natural, as if recorded by a real band. In fact some tracks could as well be placed under contemporary instrumental music, not simple electronica. I don't know how many real instruments Nikila used for this album (if any), but I doubt it could be so much as it seems. Some of these totally natural sounds simply have to be artificial. And it only confirms her true mastery.

But that's not all. The diversity of this recording is breathtaking. Each song is completely different, full of different ideas, played on different instruments, representing a different genre. Apart from the said contemporary instrumental, we have here nu jazz, downtempo, breakbeat, even industrial. If she let herself put so many ideas into short, under 30-minute album, how huge must be her creativity. It's scary. People shouldn't be so good. ;-) For some artists it would be enough for their whole career.

And that's still not all! One could think that so many different elements contained in such short tracks just have to generate total senseless chaos. And probably they would. With any regular artist, who is not a musical genius. But for Nikila it's a piece of cake. Everything fits perfectly, as if designed by evolution, by trial and error, over millions of years. There's no room for a coincidence. They just had to sound this way. It's so obvious once you already heard them.

I have only one complaint - they are too short. I read the description and I know it's a deliberate move. But these songs are so packed with highly condensed awesomeness, that one minute is really much too short to properly appreciate them. It's as if somebody forced you to admire talent of Hieronymus Bosch by showing his works for 5 seconds each. Wouldn't it be a torture?

For the time being, the only solution for listening to this album without risking a painful death from a musical hunger, is to play it on loop. But that's only a half measure, unfortunately. I WANT THEM LONGER! ;-) I was really tempted to lower my rating because of that, but I came to a conclusion that it would be very unfair to punish these compositions just because they are short.

By the way, what a pity Phon left Jamendo. He would go mad from happiness seeing Nikila used one of his songs. On second thought, he could fall into catatonia, so maybe it's better he can't see it.

By the way (II), I was so lucky as to hear this album in a lossless format, because Nikila was so generous to share the original WAV files with me. I don't know if she would be willing to share them with others, but I would try to ask her if I were you - the listening pleasure will be doubled, that's for sure. This is the work that should be heard in the best format possible.

By the way (III), I know it's April Fools' Day today, but I'm gravely serious here, people.

Nick R 61 - "Time Ime Me E"

Very good electronica concept album (9/10) The idea of album is time. Tiny, distant sounds represent hours, glitches represents seconds etc... Very good creative electronica playing on theme of time and clocks. Reminds me of Jean Michel Jarre in this regard, although musically it's much more modern, of course. Bat For Lashes - "Two Suns" [Special Edition] (2009)

Brighton, England's Bat for Lashes is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Natasha Khan. The Pakistan-born Khan pulls from her art school education and her experience producing multimedia installations when it comes to writing songs. She also cites Steve Reich and Susan Hiller as influences, while echoes of Björk and Siouxsie Sioux are heard throughout Bat for Lashes' mystical indie rock sound.
