Damn you, YouTube sidebar! I have some work to do, you know?! This time simply a fantastic video to the song (not bad either) by the Australian act The Grates. It was directed by Dimitri Basil. Dimitri is not on Wikipedia (yet), but you can read an online interview with the guy. I hope his future career will be as successful as this clip.

Usually it is strangely related to those people getting older and becoming less open, more nostalgic and focused on the past. Well... What can you do? The world moves on. However, as long as you can still top the charts just with a good melody, powerful voice and acoustic guitar, I officially announce: the Music is well, thank you for your concern. OK, good looks won't hurt, either. ;-P

Maria Peszek is a highly acclaimed Polish singer/songwriter. She is considered to be controversial, especially by right-wing retards and tabloids, because she is not afraid to openly discuss - both in lyrics to her songs and in interviews - themes such as sex, faith, patriotism and mental diseases. Each of her three albums was a commercial success, at the same time being praised by the critics and receiving many awards in her native Poland. She sings exclusively in Polish. Maria Awaria (Maria the Failure) is a loose concept album about sex, love and femininity. All lyrics are in Polish and they are really good, witty and powerful, being an important factor in making these songs as awesome as they are. Therefore, this album may not appeal to non-Polish speaking public, as some tracks are built around lyrics with musical background playing only a small part ("Milosc w systemie Dolby Surround", "Reks", "Ladne slowa to"). Nevertheless, I still encourage you to check this album out, because many other tracks are brilliant from the musical side too (e.g. "Rosol", "Hujawiak", "Maria Awaria", "Muchomory"). From the musical perspective this is a pop (or pop rock) record, with some jazz and modern electronica influences. The album is masterfully produced by one of the best Polish producers and electronica composers, Andrzej Smolik, so the said musical background is full of pleasant surprises on many occasions. Many of Peszek's vocal lines are catchy as hell too and should be enjoyable even without understanding of her lyrics. Maria Awaria To zdecydowanie najbardziej kobieca i erotyczna płyta na polskim rynku od czasów... Hmmm... No właśnie, takiego albumu jeszcze w kraju nad Wisłą nie było. Maria Peszek na swoim drugim krążku odkrywa przed słuchaczami swoją kobiecą naturę. Bez zażenowania śpiewa o tym, że "dla własnej wygody zapuszcza swe ogrody i kolekcjonuje wzwody". Zdradza też swoje swoje erotyczne fantazje. Zachęca kochanka do lizania, solenia i miętolenia swego drobnego ciała. Z niemal fotograficzną dokładnością opisuje również style współczesnych kobiet, które z jednej strony "chude, wysokie z wydepilowanym krokiem", a z drugiej mogą być kurami domowymi. Odkrywa też swoją romantyczną duszę i w piękny, metaforyczny sposób (swoim delikatnym aksamitnym głosem) śpiewa o tęsknocie. I od razu zapewniam: mimo różnych – może kontrowersyjnych – stwierdzeń teksty nie są wulgarne, nie przekraczają cienkiej granicy dobrego smaku (choć się do niej niebezpiecznie zbliżają). Jeszcze słowo o samej muzyce, za którą odpowiedzialny był Andrzej Smolik. To miks przeróżnych styli muzycznych: od delikatnego, transowego, nastrojowego trip-hopu i chilloutu pełnego "powietrza" i ciepłych muzycznych plam, przez nieco jazzujące swingi, altarnatywnego retropopu, po elementy starego rocka z lat 60-tych. Lousy vocals ruin everything (2/10) Ultime cri , ce sont 10 chansons plutôt tristes et qui sont malheureusement pour moi de circonstance....... Ce C.D n' est pas mixé plus que celà, mais ce que j' ai voulu exprimer est dedans : il parait que pour apprécier il faut le même symtôme m' a dit un psychanalyste...... La pochette c' est une sculpture sur pommier que j' ai réalisée dans mon jardin et qui s' appèlle "monsieur Bonhomme" Il me parait évident que les pros de l' enregistrement vont dire que mon son est merdique et ils auront raison.......Retenez uniquement la mélodie simple et les mots..... A bientôt pour le 3ème CD Sylvain

Beware (1/10) album DEMO enregistré "à la maison " sur Magix studio 6ème génération avec de trés petits moyens. un clavier casio (enfant), un magnéto 4 pistes(table), un micro chant, et une guitare electro-acoustique LAG modèle spring. Les moyens de production sont faibles mais l' essentiel est posé.Je ne suis pas un "chanteur". Je suis trés heureux de partager avec les auditrices et les auditeurs de JAMENDO. INFO: un deuxième CD est en préparation ( il faut dire que je stocke depuis logtemps maintenant..)

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Lousy voice, terrible drums, uninteresting melodies. Guitar is quite good, but all is wasted because of badness of other elements. Poor production tops it off, but the biggest problem is lack of vocal and arranging talent. Maybe the lyrics are impressive? I don't know it, because I can't speak French.

Tryad - "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)"

Strong debiut (7/10) industrial, classical, and pop all come together with this new 'virtual band' known as try^d. with members in seattle, ohio, and japan, try^d music is created entirely over the internet. most members have never met in person. try^d includes vavrek, ema, and arna from seattle on lead vocals, rjmarshall from japan on keyboards, and john holowach as the band's producer. I started my adventure with Try^d with their third album "Listen". I was completely mesmerized and shocked by the quality and beauty of this album. Their debut "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)" is of course weaker than "Listen" but this is still beautiful music for every fan of triphop or atmospheric rock/pop. I have one complaint - I don't like the voice of the singer on "The Final Rewind". But apart from that - great job. I gave 7 points, but that's only because this album is followed by "Listen". "Ain't That Far" - I recommend this track to every true rock fan. Really great song. The others are nice, but not so catchy. They are just ordinary rock songs lacking freshness but "Ain't That Far" definitely will stay for good on my 'Favorites' playlist. Although I must say that after several times I started to like all the five. I just had to give the others some time, because they are not immediate hits.

Association with REM is obvious. But I do not say these guys are plagiarists. I say that to get them people's attention. They just explore a similar area of rock music and the vocalist has a voice resembling that of Michael Stipe. I will not be original either, saying that I agree with everybody that "My Innocence" is definitely the greatest song on this album. But I will say more - it is so awesome that it would be high on any list of the greatest rock hits of all time - if only more people had a chance to listen to it.

Apart from REM, several tracks remind me of Live and I think Hype is even more similar to Live than to REM. Especially with regard to "My Innocence", but also "Anybody here", which is almost as good as "My Innocence". Both songs could be placed on "The Distance To Here" right beside "The Dolphin's Cry" and nobody would notice any difference in quality. In my opinion Hype has a potential for a big career - not only in France but on international scale.

And one more thing - how stupid one has to be to rate the music album by the quality of the cover? Maybe such people should move to the graphical arts website? So, 10 points for "My Innocence" and "Anybody here", 7 points for the rest. Overall: 8,5. I must choose 8 or 9 when rating, so I choose 9 - those two songs are REALLY great. Check them out - it is free, remember? And also check out their second album "Just A Catwalk From Heaven", especially track no. 2 "Ain't That Far". One more precious gem.

Fortunately, a CC license is irrevocable and the recording has been archived by the one and only archive.org Internet library. Le mix a été réalisé indépendemment par un professionnel (merci Mathieu) qui a apporté une oreille plus objective et pas mal d'idées pour la dernière touche... Hobby Horse - "Dry Flower"

Not bad, but doesn't fit my taste (6/10) Ep comprenant 6 titres, enregistrer en novembre 2006 par Pierre David. Nade : Guitare et Chant Sylvain : Guitare et Chant Rémi : Betterie et Choeurs Vianney : Basse et Choeurs The musicians are skilled, but I do not like the vocalist's singing manner. There is no passion in her voice, she sings as if somebody pointed gun at her head and made her do it. There are no catchy melodies and the noise is not powerful but dull and boring. I love noisy music but it has to appeal to me because of its qualities. When there are no melodies, we should be able to feel the "power of noise" - the overwhelming desire to smash a chair on a wall and break windows with your head (a great example would be the band "Therapy?"). During this recording I had only an overwhelming desire to go to sleep. There is one exception - the first track "Alex". This one is really fine. But not because of the singing manner, but because of the great riffs. Their sound is heavily influenced by Sonic Youth, what can be seen as another drawback or a recommendation depending on whether you are a fan of Sonic Youth or rather originality.

Mediocre achievement (5/10) Il est là... servez vous. ecoutez le, critiquez le, aimez le, detestez le. Mais surtout, dites le. Ici, maintenant. Good technical skills are not always connected with a composing talent. The tunes on this album are just average - the band plays exactly the same as thousands other nu-metal bands nowadays. So the result is rather boring, because you are not surprised with anything. A solid work without the soul. I also have to mention drums, which are particularly bad, with overwhelming annoying hi-hat in front. Yuck! Slightly better than average: 1 Bonanza 2 Koto le satellite 6 Z.2 (this one is only a small electronic interlude - but a surprisingly good one)

Baiki - "Do It Yourself"

A promising act - check it out if you like folk rock (6/10) The title of the album soon imposed itself : We had no label, so we threw ourselves in self-production We had no distributor, so we went into self-distribution We had no promoter, so we self-promoted We had no website, so self-webmastered Knowing we could only rely on ourselves, we named the album after this self-attitude. And to push the concept further, we declined the imagery of a multinational DIY furniture store to create the cover of our album. It was nothing more than a gimmick, no bad intentions… We must confess that the end result was remarkable thanks to the combined talents of 2 friends : Michel and Chan. So we had a good laugh though that didn’t last long. This multinational got really upset. The end result was that we had to bring their minds at peace and promise to put an end to our misdemeanour and commit to stop annoying them again in the future. This CD was therefore “released” in a fairly confidential way in Belgium at the end of 2003. Nevertheless, there only remains a handful of this “outlaw collector”. And then hope came from the South, from Montpellier to be precise. A modest label, Musiquémo took “Do It Yourself” under their wings and signed a licensing agreement. A new cover was created, the CD repressed and bang “Do It Yourself” now proudly sits in the music shop racks in France since mid-February 2005. This is quite an interesting work, blending rock, pop rock and folk rock, based on heavy use of acoustic instruments, with the singer trying to sing in four different languages. I do not know if it was such a good idea, because I have the impression that because of lack of language skills his performance is much weaker than it could be. This is definitely true with my native Polish, but Spanish also sounds very unconvincing, as if he had much trouble with proper pronunciation. Nevertheless, it is a promising act, with a potential to grow. For the time being some tracks lack good melodies, the others have them too obvious and simple. The ugly cover of the Polish folk standard "Sokoly" shows clearly that they should work much much harder on their arrangements and ability to transmit musical energy through their recordings. Still, I listened to this album with interest and I put them on my watchlist, hoping they will improve. Check them out if you like folk rock.

Religionnaire - "Religionnaire V: Des Calques Aux Manies"

Mediocre '70s rock (5/10) La genèse ainsi que la maturation foetale de Religionnaire s'effectue sur un fond sonore 70's oscillant particulièrement entre le The Kick Inside de Kate Bush et Atom Heart Mother de Pink Floyd. La redécouverte de ces deux albums 20 ans plus tard va non seulement se transformer en révélation, mais également influencer la base de son inspiration. The album lacks interesting melodies, the voice of the singer is not interesting, ballads are quite boring, there is too much borrowing from the stars of the '70s. The best tracks are: 1 Des Calques... 2 Oui J'Aime le Rock, Progressif (obvious copying of Led Zeppelin style of writing) 5 Bandicapé 9 Religionnaire (one more proof that the artist is far better in aggressive hard rock than in pop rock ballads - see track 6 Olga - completely terrible, although the name is beautiful) 13 ...Aux Manies Oh, I almost forgot about the biggest disaster - a track no. 10 Come Again, which is a rock version of the famous Adagio by Albinoni. Celibatfighters - "Remise en ordre"

Lack of interesting melodies, too eclectic (5/10) Second album d'une longue série: Plus guilleret, il mêle une grande partie de nos influences musicales. Parlant des choses qui nous entourent, qui nous font rire, pleurer et nous énervent. Cet album est moins intime mais reste très proche de notre état d'esprit. I was not too pleased with this recording. It lacks interesting melodies and is too eclectic. Eclecticism must not be a bad thing, but only if it is a planned action. Eclecticism on this album seems to be a result of a coincidence: "we somehow succeeded in composing some songs, so here they are". Also technical skills and quality of recording of some of these tunes are questionable (e.g. 03 Qu'est ce qui m'arrive?). Only two tracks are better than average: 1 Aller simple - a very dark and moody tune with an interesting melody; 10 Bande a part - a light acoustic guitar song with a funny melody. Fabercut - "Lies"

Could be better (5/10) How lies can devastate and alienate, whether at home, in love, with friends, online, etc. This is the main subject of the album inspired by those who are able to lie in order to take advantage of people's trust. A homemade album produced in 3 months (September - December 2011) with a guitar, a bass guitar and a computer. Special thanks to Eugenio Zazzara for the original bass. Rock heavily influenced by grunge. The band has some potential, but they have to work hard on many aspects of their music to make it attractive. First of all, the technical side is very weak. The mix is flat, of demo quality, with the voice often hidden deep in the background (Stranger in my bed, Atto Unico). It would be hard to enjoy this recording even if everything else was perfect. But it is not. Sometimes the singer is out of tune (Atto Unico). In "My hell" the singer too obviously tries to copy Alice In Chains' vocalist's style. In "Farewell" monotonous drums are really annoying. Finally the album lacks interesting melodies or energy. Two tracks slightly stand out of the crowd: "Yourself online" - more energetic and with nice riffs and the final track "Lies" with more sophisticated arrangement creating disturbing atmosphere. Like I said it is not a total disaster and they may get better if only they put enough hard work into their development.

Z.o.Z. - "Morfina"

Not bad, but not very interesting either (5/10) Mix of rock, trip hop and post rock with Polish lyrics. It's not bad, but at the same time not attractive enough to keep my attention focused. They claim they like to experiment, but I didn't hear many experiments on this album. I didn't find catchy melodies either. Lyrics? Correct, but forgettable. Vocals? Your ears won't hurt but nothing more. Gloomy atmosphere? Present, but I wasn't carried away. To sum up: if you like the genre, you can check it out, but don't expect a masterpiece. Not catchy enough (6/10) electric-acoustic-singer-songwriter-lo-fi-indie music written by a person in his room by touching strings, using vocal cords, arranging samples, clapping hands, hitting bottles and so on... This is simple dreamy guitar pop rock. This is a professional recording and will find its fans for sure. For me, however, it is not catchy enough to keep my attention focused.
