Music is well, thank you: Selah Sue - "Raggamuffin"

Some people like to complain that true music died and all that contemporary artists produce is shit. Usually it is strangely related to those people getting older and becoming less open, more nostalgic and focused on the past. Well... What can you do? The world moves on.

However, as long as you can still top the charts just with a good melody, powerful voice and acoustic guitar, I officially announce: the Music is well, thank you for your concern.

OK, good looks won't hurt, either. ;-P

Sylmer - "Perdus dans le temps"

Bad bad bad (2/10)

Another miss. And no progress since "Ultime cri". Unfortunately...

Sylmer - "Ultime cri"

Lousy vocals ruin everything (2/10)

What can I say... It's better than "Originaire", but still bad. The same weaknesses as before. Oh, I like the cover photo.

Sylmer - "Originaire"

Beware (1/10)

Beware!

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Lousy voice, terrible drums, uninteresting melodies. Guitar is quite good, but all is wasted because of badness of other elements. Poor production tops it off, but the biggest problem is lack of vocal and arranging talent. Maybe the lyrics are impressive? I don't know it, because I can't speak French.

The album has been released on Jamendo and is available for downloading in mp3 encoding format.

TAT - "Quinta Essentia"

Good gothic album (7/10)

Lacrimosa meets Dead Can Dance meets Einsturzende Neubauten - these are the first associations that came to my mind after listening to this album. But TAT is still quite original. For example, use of a classical guitar gives a very interesting effect. Dark ghotic tunes - very haunting. The only downside is the terrible French accent in English songs.

Hobby Horse - "Dry Flower"

Not bad, but doesn't fit my taste (6/10)

The musicians are skilled, but I do not like the vocalist's singing manner. There is no passion in her voice, she sings as if somebody pointed gun at her head and made her do it. There are no catchy melodies and the noise is not powerful but dull and boring. I love noisy music but it has to appeal to me because of its qualities. When there are no melodies, we should be able to feel the "power of noise" - the overwhelming desire to smash a chair on a wall and break windows with your head (a great example would be the band "Therapy?"). During this recording I had only an overwhelming desire to go to sleep.

There is one exception - the first track "Alex". This one is really fine. But not because of the singing manner, but because of the great riffs.

Their sound is heavily influenced by Sonic Youth, what can be seen as another drawback or a recommendation depending on whether you are a fan of Sonic Youth or rather originality.

Celibatfighters - "Remise en ordre"

Lack of interesting melodies, too eclectic (5/10)

I was not too pleased with this recording. It lacks interesting melodies and is too eclectic. Eclecticism must not be a bad thing, but only if it is a planned action. Eclecticism on this album seems to be a result of a coincidence: "we somehow succeeded in composing some songs, so here they are". Also technical skills and quality of recording of some of these tunes are questionable (e.g. 03 Qu'est ce qui m'arrive?).

Only two tracks are better than average:
1 Aller simple - a very dark and moody tune with an interesting melody;
10 Bande a part - a light acoustic guitar song with a funny melody.

Kaczmarski, Gintrowski, Lapinski - "Mury" (1981)

Jacek Kaczmarski (March 22, 1957, Warsaw - April 10, 2004, Gdańsk) was a Polish singer, songwriter, poet and author.

Kaczmarski was a voice of the Solidarity trade union movement in 1980s Poland, for his commitment to a free Poland, independent of Soviet rule. His songs criticized the ruling communist regime and appealed to the tradition of patriotic resistance within Poles. He remains best known for his protest songs on social and political subjects ("Mury" (Walls) based on "L'estaca" by Lluís Llach, "Obława" (Wolf hunt (lit. Raid))). However, he was more a poet than a political singer, and his texts have not lost their relevance with the demise of the Soviet union and its communist bloc.

Kaczmarski was known not only for his politically motivated lyrics but also for his characteristically dynamic — even aggressive — classical guitar playing, and expressive performance style. His deep knowledge of not only his nation's history but also of classical literature gave his songs a particularly deep and multi-layered resonance (e.g. "Powtórka z Odysei," recalled Homer's Odyssey, and "Lalka," was a masterful strike at the heart of a riveting Polish novel). He often performed before contrastingly different audiences: groups of friends in their homes, campus venues, and large concert halls in Poland, the rest of Europe and America.

Zbigniew Łapiński w niezwykle świeży i nieustannie twórczy sposób wzbogaca dość monotonną i jednolitą muzykę kolegów.

A rozmowa z kierowcą zabroniona...

I dalej.

Mury to obrazowy przykład sztuki translatorskiej Jacka Kaczmarskiego. Adaptacje barda zawsze wychodzą poza zwykły przekład i to wychodzą daleko.

Zwalali pomniki i rwali bruk – Ten z nami! Ten przeciw nam!
Kto sam – ten nasz najgorszy wróg!
A śpiewak także był sam...

Review by Daniel Wyszogrodzki

I usually discourage people from buying records issued by the majors, as almost all the money goes to the recording industry mafia anyhow and will be used later for committing crimes such as unlawful harassment of fans and bribing authorities to implement changes in law, which would infringe basic human rights.

However, in this case, the said "mafia" did a really good job at remastering all the works of Jacek Kaczmarski and helped reviving his popularity in the 90-ties, supporting him until his premature death in 2004. His works are published with all due respect and esteem that this greatest Polish singer/songwriter deserves. Therefore - you won't hear it from me often - if you like this album, I encourage you to buy it. In this case the record label (Pomaton EMI) really earned its pay and deserves to be rewarded.

Various Artists - "The WIRED CD Rip. Sample. Mash. Share"

Very good compilation (8/10)

This is a very good compilation from the variety of artists, some of which are well-known, like Beastie Boys or David Byrne. The compilation is very diverse stylistically, ranging from hip-hop, r&b and latino through rock to electronica. Most of the tracks are really good - I didn't like only 4 tracks out of 13, so it's a quite nice ratio. Be sure to check it out!

The fact that some famous artists support the CC licensing mode deserves the highest praise on its own, of course, and makes it a very important work just because of that.

By the way, visit the official website for three more tracks not included on the Jamendo edition.

apijamm - "Gitarrensolo"

Interesting but unlistenable experiment (5/10)

This is an interesting experiment. The music is extremely repetitive, monotonous and lo-fi. The effect is quite distracting and intriguing. It's of course minimal but because of its repetitive nature it strongly resembles some industrial works, despite using very different technical means.

Having said that, I must remind you that it's a musical - not experimental - website. Therefore, I base my ratings on musical qualities of the presented recordings. This album - for me - hardly qualifies as music and definitely is not suitable for repeated listening. Hence the rating. Of course that's just me - if even such artists as Merzbow have their fan base, I'm sure this work may also appeal to a (rather small) number of people.

Tuta, Jakub - "Jakub Tuta"

Nice melodies - terrible mix (3/10)

Album nagrany w pewną cichą noc. Zapraszam do słuchania.

Jakub is a talented musician, his tunes are very atmospheric and this album would be great if not for the mix. Or the lack of. Both channels contain completely different tracks - you have a melody in one ear and an accompaniment in the other. Maybe it can be listened on speakers but on headphones it's a real pain. It's frustrating and disturbing. It's definitely not something one could call "stereo" - "double mono" would better describe the experience. So the only way to listen to it without grinding one's teeth, would be to downmix it to mono.

I think Jakub should consider mixing this album properly and updating the tunes on Jamendo. These are good songs and it's a pity one cannot listen to them with pleasure.

The album has been released on Jamendo and is available for downloading in mp3 or ogg format.
Beware!

Tuta, Jakub - "Fuck Me"

Good compositions - bad production (6/10)

Jakub has a composing talent - his tunes are catchy and atmospheric and would be great. Unfortunately, he lacks production skills. Completely. He has a lot to learn, before his songs will be fun to listen. As for now, bad production kills all the fun, so 6/10 rating is all I can give.

So learn hard, dear Jakub, or hire a producer.

Oh, some progress can be seen already - this time he at least managed to mix channels properly.

Coma Stereo - "Binary Endings"

Very good post rock (8/10)

"Binary endings" is an over 50 minutes of a very spatial, a bit nostalgic and melancholic sounds evoking such a bands as the silver mount zion, godspeed you! Black emperor, trans am and explosions in the sky. Sometimes ,when the forlorn vocal is present( "obsessions and a tulip"), it may be associated with xiu xiu, no twist or even The Cure.
Four musicians from Slovenia take us in a imaginative trip arousing a full scale of perceptible emotions and associated with their memories. A light electronic and an extensive passage created by guitars intertwine with mind-blowing, sometimes a bit brutal and dramatic mood. It`s a great challenge for a post-rock band to achieve a balance between an experimental guitar formulas and electronic-ambient threads. Coma Stereo gives it to you and for this reason it is an obligatory position for connoisseurs of the style.
Binary endings gives you a 50 minutes of sound which is a perfect connection between hypnotic and magic motives and dose of field recordings. So if you like to listen music full of sadness and filled with pain but with a ray of hope at once, don't hesitate to download this album. It's perfect music to listen in the dark and alienation.

Very good post rock album. Great gloomy atmosphere, depressive melodies. Highly recommended for fans of dark guitar music.

The album has been released by the 49manekinow.net netlabel and is available for downloading at archive.org in mp3 format. You can also download it directly from the artist at Bandcamp for free in a variety of formats, including a lossless FLAC version.

If deja vu is a post-experience who repeats itself or is a similar repetitive action in our system so to speak. Then I find this life and its system we are living in, as one big deja vu experience I want to escape..... Today is all about making money and being someone. Companies and humans are killing each other for a name, for profit and land. Someone else are trying just to make a living, because they do not "fit in", in this moneymaking-drowning world. .... This music is about people, oppression and beings who are themselves.. And not tries to be someone else or manipulating for fame. .... Capitalism is just another dying breed is a side-project. Enjoy and download the music for free and leave a comment if you like!
Victor Soldéus.

Obligatory position for everyone who loves Come On Die Young by Mogwai. This is about oppression. This is about molestation. This is about people. This is about fear. This is atrabilious. This is about you. This is about me. This is about us.

Very dark and depressive guitar ambient with traces of noise. Quite captivating, but definitely not for everyone. This is rather difficult music, only for fans of strange sounds. Although, sometimes it gets too calm and repetitive (tracks 01 & 05 are just boring).
