Mikrodepresja - "Static Improvised Soloworks For Non-input Mixer Vol. 1"

Boring glitch-based ambient (3/10)

Non-input mixing board improvised series vol. 1 is a new simple logic project. For one day in one week mikrodepresja will be prepared a few pieces of improvised live electronics based only at non-input mixer feedbacks, glitches, failings and defects. No mix, no mastering no re-recordings, cut-up's etc. Pure, static non-input mixing board noises and drones.
LISTEN LOUD! or WITH HEADPHONES (also loud)!

The owner of the netlabel 49manekinow that publishes Mikrodepresja here must really hate this band. The previous album was packed in a password-protected rar archive (sic!). This one is in wma format. :-/
If you don't like this band - just drop them! ;-P

As for the music - this time at least it is possible to listen to them. And it's nothing special, unfortunately (now I understand why the previous album was password-protected ;-> ). It is simple ambient, based on noise and glitch. Totally boring, without any creative ideas, like a recording session of some equipment tuning. Don't waste your time.

On second thought, if you're a dedicated fan of noise/glitch, you can check it out. But I am able to find interesting works for me also in this genre. But not this one.

The album has been released by the 49manekinow.net netlabel and is available for downloading at archive.org in wma (!) format.

Procesor Plus - "Histeria" [SP]

Dull electro punk (4/10)

Procesor Plus is a one-man electro-punk project, functioning since 1999. Its founder is Grzegorz Feingold whose music is truly thrilling: it combines a quick beat and deep electronic sounds with resolute texts and a noisy vocal. The new Procesor Plus album "Katalepsja" features electronic sounds complemented by looped guitar and drum motifs as well as overdriven bass.

Procesor Plus - "histeria" - is electro punk single which promotes the new LP called "Gen-Era-Tor". The LP will be released in 1st of March by Trujaca Fala.

Dull electro punk. Primitive melodies and sounds, ugly vocals. Not recommended.

The album has been released by the 49manekinow.net netlabel and is available for downloading at archive.org in mp3 format.

dK - "Electroglamour And Infinite Sadness"

Zuppa Romana (6/10)

First album published by Karmasutra (then [dK]) in 1999.
songwriting > [K]
arrangement - programming - editing > [K]
guitars on the guilt - breaking off the fight - alms - ordinary state of grace - best pain > [captain]
guitars on karmastate - in front of River - the ethics of River > [jp]
mixing - mastering > [K]

I've got mixed feelings after listening to this album. What are "mixed feelings"? There is this popular joke: "mixed feelings are when you're watching your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new Ferrari". Well... Maybe. But for me it's also "hearing great music spoiled by a bad singer with a terrible English accent".

Why on Earth so many people feel they have to sing in English, even if they lack skills? Somebody kidnapped your mother-in-law and threatens to throw her off a cliff, if you start singing in your native language? Ooops! Bad example. Anyhow...

Everything else, apart from the vocalist's work, is at least good on this album. Great dark atmosphere, catchy melodies, very fine distorted guitars, nice electronic effects put in just right places. Just listen to these three instrumental pieces: 06, 08 & 12. Very interesting dark electronica, isn't it? Only maybe production is not up to par on several tracks, but not below my level of tolerance.

And then... the singer. His voice is weak and from time to time he is almost out-of-tune. I could tolerate it, if this was his only problem. But the true disaster is his English accent. Why not to sing in Italian? Somebody told them only italo-disco is permitted in Italian? OK, the sound of English is great, it is an easy language to sing and write lyrics, but it makes sense only if the vocalist is able to learn a decent accent! Otherwise, just stick with your native language and the effect will be infinitely better. Because for now, it's just "Zuppa Romana".

Of course, I can recommend this album to people who don't know English, or are unable to hear differences in English accents, because the instrumental part is very good.

What's the genre? A dark synthpop / electro with industrial feel to it - a mix of Depeche Mode and Oomph! for me. By the way, speaking of Oomph!... Somehow they are not ashamed to sing in German. Instead of embarrassing themselves with "Änglisch"...

If deja vu is a post-experience who repeats itself or is a similar repetitive action in our system so to speak. Then I find this life and its system we are living in, as one big deja vu experience I want to escape..... Today is all about making money and being someone. Companies and humans are killing each other for a name, for profit and land. Someone else are trying just to make a living, because they do not "fit in", in this moneymaking-drowning world. .... This music is about people, oppression and beings who are themselves.. And not tries to be someone else or manipulating for fame. .... Capitalism is just another dying breed is a side-project. Enjoy and download the music for free and leave a comment if you like!
Victor Soldéus.

Obligatory position for everyone who loves Come On Die Young by Mogwai. This is about oppression. This is about molestation. This is about people. This is about fear. This is atrabilious. This is about you. This is about me. This is about us.

Very dark and depressive guitar ambient with traces of noise. Quite captivating, but definitely not for everyone. This is rather difficult music, only for fans of strange sounds. Although, sometimes it gets too calm and repetitive (tracks 01 & 05 are just boring).

Voai - "Ketanov eff." [EP]

Interesting downtempo (8/10)

Beginning electronic music artist from Poland. Voai (Mihail Zarichanskiy, born in Lutsk (Ukraine) on November 12th, 1990) is a one-man project started in the end of 2010. Concentrated on a conception of deep melodic feelings, intellectual sounding of downbeat /// minimal and techno with impurity of dark ambient sounds (mainly, it depends on the mood he is in).
Voai likes to experiment with dff styles to find smth new.

Interesting downtempo. Nice sitar samples in the second track, adding ethnic atmosphere. It's a pity there are only two songs here.

Skneepa - "Racecourse Demo"

A significant progress, but I still hope for more (7/10)

We are an unsigned thrash/groove/hardcore metal band from a small town called Hexham, twenty miles West of Newcastle, England. We take our name from the ancient Greek adjective meaning "As drunk as a Lord", pronounced with a silent 'k' (we reckon). (F.Y.I - Spelled differently, and pronounced 'pur', it also means "clit" in Icelandic (Cheers, Eli Roth)). We grew up together listening to Pantera, Metallica, Maiden ... and so many others, and found Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Slipknot (again, to mention but a few) along the way. Now we're all grown up, and we've got something we'd like you to hear. If you like it, let it show. Thanks to all for listening. P.S. SIGN US!! We're young, fit and keen, and the music is mean. .... You can download all our tunes for free from ..Skneepa Bandcamp.. or from our ..last.fm page.

Strange. It seems that this band has two accounts on Jamendo, each with one (different) demo: If the time between publishing of both demos (only 4 months) relates to the distance between their recording, it would mean that the vocalist worked really hard. As you can see in my review of the other demo, I consider him to be the weakest link in the otherwise solid metal chain. This time he managed to restrain his desperate croaks to the point where they are almost bearable.

The rest of the band is quite good, production is acceptable for a demo, so I'm going to give this recording 7/10. It is still rating on credit, considering the not-completely-eradicated croaking of the singer. But both tracks are entertaining and deserve recognition. If the vocalist completely abandons this laughable "scary" manner of singing, the future should be bright. So this is definitely the act worth putting on a watchlist.

By the way, I just love the cover. It is gloomy and disturbing, but without using all the worn-out metal motifs. Well done!

Voo Voo - "Wszyscy muzycy to wojownicy" (2010)

Very good classic rock album from one of the best Polish rock bands - Voo Voo. Very original music, fresh, yet with deep roots in the past. Polish lyrics and a strange voice of the singer may be seen as disadvantages for some, but every true fan of traditional rock should at least give it a try.

Warning! The band probably* does not sell this record outside of the official distribution, so if you buy this album, almost all the money will go to the recording industry mafia and will be used later for committing crimes such as unlawful harassment of fans and bribing authorities to implement changes in law, which would infringe basic human rights.

Tataman - "Moody" [EP]

Not fun at all (1/10)

One of the tags chosen by the artist says "fun". Well... For me it wasn't "fun" at all. Unless we are talking about making "fun" of the artist...

This short album contains guitar-based instrumental rock and could be maybe acceptable, if not for drums. Terrible clicks and buzzes pretending to be drums are so pathetic it hurts. They totally overwhelm the guitar wailing in the background and are so ugly they raise the urge to immediately push the stop button. It sounds as if somebody stole guitar demos of the artist and added these "drums" to discredit him.

Stick with guitar work, man. Or hire a drummer. Or a producer. Or change a hobby.

The album has been released on Jamendo and is available for downloading in mp3 or ogg format.
Beware!

Acidfefe - "Acid" [SP]

Short album - short review (5/10)

Totally typical, tedious too, techno trance track. The tune's tiring - thank Thor terse, though.

Bluz'n'Harp - "Nobody's perfect"

Mediocre folk rock (4/10)

It's generic folk rock (or maybe rather singer/songwriter folk-influenced pop) of mediocre quality. The singer's voice is uninteresting, the tunes boring and production quite amateurish. It's not a disaster though, and considering that quality of melodies is a matter of taste, I can imagine it may be appreciated by some people. So if you're a dedicated fan of the genre and you don't care about shortcomings of performance and production, you may give it a try, 'cause "Nobody's perfect".

Narcissus and The Fools - "Servants of The Plastical Omen"

Extremely amateurish rock (2/10)

I tried. I really tried. I even listened to all the songs (skipping only some of them after a minute or two). Call me a hero. Because almost everything is so wrong on this album that it's almost unlistenable.

The singer's voice is bad, he sings out-of-tune and what he sings is only loosely connected to the accompaniment. Speaking of which, all the instruments are playing whatever they like, not paying any attention to the others, so combined within a single track, they do not form a cohesive whole. The result is a total chaos. Apart from the vocals, the drums deserve special mention for being particularly bad.

To summarize, even these two points are given on credit. Why? Maybe because I feel the artist put much work into this recording (not like so many others, who mercilessly publish raw results of their 15-minute sessions of making accidental noises). Because I see they really try to make these songs interesting and atmospheric (to a disastrous result, but at least they try).

Try harder next time, guys. Much much harder.

The album has been released on Jamendo and is available for downloading in mp3 or ogg format.

Triplexity - "Afro Blue" [SP]

Very good (8/10)

NuJazz Ambient World Fusion composition based on Afro Blue theme by Mongo Santamaria.

Lossless FLAC version of our music can be obtained on triplexity.blogspot.com.

That's only very good.

Excuse me for this harsh ;-) review, but after the first album I hoped for a masterpiece. And this track is... nice... professional... well arranged... but it does not have a power of a ten-ton hammer like its predecessors. It's too easy and smooth.

I hope it will be the worst on the next album.

InDePeNdEnCiA - "Estacao Independencia" [EP]

Quite a progress since debut (6/10)

This EP contains three re-recorded songs taken from the previous album and one brand new track. The recording shows a significant progress since the debut. Quality of production is acceptable this time, allowing a listener to appreciate the decent instrumental work and quite catchy (sometimes) and energetic hard rock punk-influenced songs. Unfortunately, it also reveals true weakness of the vocalist, who spoils what his colleagues have accomplished.

Nevertheless, taking into consideration the progress already made, this is a promising act.

Villiers, Jacques de - "More Wind for Lonely Suburbs" [EP]

Great minimal ambient (9/10)

Noisy broken sounds that will make you cry. It's a teaser of sorts for a forthcoming full-length that will be out by the end of the year. Contains Jacques de Villiers' video art.

Minimal ambient - slow and calm, yet never boring, full of interesting sounds. Classy, well-crafted recording, highly recommended.

The album has been released by the 49manekinow.net netlabel and is available for downloading at archive.org in mp3 format. There is also a much smaller version of this album without a video available here.

Various Artists – "Music For Danny DeVito"

What a brilliant idea! (9/10)

This time Mixgalaxy Records made a special compilation for Mr. Danny DeVito. Why? Because nobody have never done this to him before. At least officially. We sorta didn’t know what kind of music he prefers so we’ve set up a tracklist of a wide variety of genres for him to pick from. We decided that making it a private release would be unfair to our listeners so you all are very much welcome to give this record a listen and share it with your friends of course.

It’s an easy bet to say that for Mr. DeVito all the names here are new, however for our regular listeners this release is once again a mix of old timers (even including Jacobo – a raggae-dub side project of Sinestesia) and a couple of guest artists which we would like to present. Meet Abel Mariam from San Jose, California, USA who contributed an opening track and meet Russian-Norwegian duo Zunzagi which consists of sound producer Sergei from Tomsk and singer Julia from Oslo. And finally welcome Without Time band form Grodno, Bealrus.

So, as you can expect from Mixgalaxy Records it’s a nice one hour set of high quality tracks fluctuating from deep ambient, easy listening and folk-pop to electro-house, breakbeat and even hip-hop. And if by any chance you are an acquaintance of Mr. DeVito – make sure to pass him the link, that will do us all a big favor.

This is a very good compilation of songs by independent artists. It is very diverse stylistically, ranging from various genres of techno and electronica, through hip hop and pop up to rock. So I guess everyone would find here something of interest. Mr. DeVito included.

I liked 10 tracks out of 16, which is not a perfect, but still very very decent, score. While some songs are first class records, there are a few, which are below average for me. However, I'm giving this compilation one additional point for the brilliant surreal concept of making this album as a gift for the great actor Danny DeVito. I love this kind of humor. And this hilarious cover - guys from Mixgalaxy Records totally rule.

I won't elaborate on bad tracks for a change. Let's focus on the good ones this time:

02 - Grosse - Mousy Cheese Song
A funny parody (I hope so ;-) ) of an acoustic rock ballad - vocal line is comprised of "la la la" sang out-of-tune over an acoustic accompaniment.

03 - Cubic - Unded
Another not fully serious recording. Looped kitschy sounding trumpet as a leading tune for some electronica. Funny and catchy.

04 - Zunzagi - Empathy
Classy trip hop / pop. Nothing too original (like the most of trip hop), but very atmospheric and catchy, with nice dreamy vocals and good accompaniment.

06 - Bear and Lampshade - Witch Hunt
Great breakcore. Don't miss this one!

07 - Gipa - Mad Electric Dog
Very good creative techno / electronica.

08 - PiXtar - Space Adventure
Electronica flirting with industrial and synthpop.

11 - YARA - Walk On Clouds
Creative and interesting ambient.

14 - Without Time - Trap
Great rock / post rock. Atmospheric, dreamy, catchy, powerful.

15 - Fedorov Mark - By The Sea
Calm acoustic instrumental rock. Not bad at all.

16 - Waterplea - Spring Reprise
Calm instrumental rock. Nice dreamy atmosphere.

The album has been released by the Mixgalaxy Records netlabel and is available for a direct download as well as at archive.org in mp3 or ogg format. Additionally, it is available on the sonicsquirrel.net website and in the BitTorrent network.

My Chemical Romance - "Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys" (2010)

With their emo-punk songwriting, theatrical vocals, and neo-goth appearance, My Chemical Romance rose from the East coast underground to the forefront of modern rock during the early 2000s. In keeping with the tragic element of the group's best-known singles -- including "Helena," "I'm Not OK (I Promise)," and "Welcome to the Black Parade" -- My Chemical Romance has roots in catastrophe, as frontman Gerard Way decided to form the band after watching the World Trade Center collapse on September 11, 2001. [Read more --->]

What matters is the sheer rush of sound: the riffs and hooks bash against each other, pushing the record forward at a breakneck speed; the band will suddenly swing from clenched punk rhythms to the strobe-light disco of “Planetary (GO!).” Certain references pop up, either in Way’s lyrics or in the buzzsaw guitars of Ray Toro and Frank Iero, these studied cultural allusions replacing teen angst as MCR’s touchstone, a shift that has the ultimate effect of lightening the band’s music considerably. There’s no emo bloodletting, no expressionist confrontations with death, just exaggerated adolescent anthems and calls to rebellion, just enough drama so this could be called cathartic by a certain generation, but for most listeners it’s crystallized fun, the purest rush My Chemical Romance has ever delivered. [Read more --->]

Warning! The band probably* does not sell this record outside of the official distribution, so if you buy this album, almost all the money will go to the recording industry mafia and will be used later for committing crimes such as unlawful harassment of fans and bribing authorities to implement changes in law, which would infringe basic human rights.

Great music for children (9/10)

David "tmx" and Christine Roche, two vocalists of the band Both, also present on Jamendo. It's an album for children!

This is utility music, sounding primitive to an adult ear, like all nursery rhymes do. But this is quality recording. Melodies are catchy and would definitely appeal to young listeners. From the technical side the album is also almost flawless - maybe some synthetic sounds are too artificial, but definitely no child would notice that.

So if someone is in search of music for children, this is a perfect choice.

I only hope (because I can't speak French) that lyrics are as pleasant as music. I wouldn't like to make such a mistake. ;->

Chapter 01. Pop Song
Growling is a very difficult technique. What a pity the majority of death metal acts are not aware of this simple fact. Because of its extremity, it is very easy to cross the border between brutality and self-parody. Skneepa crosses this border on each track, but most notably on this one, what is very unfortunate, because if not for this funny croak, it would be a really cool thrash/death metal piece.

Chapter 02. Parallell
Nice metal piece. The pitiful growling is less intrusive on this one, so the result is bearable (but could have been great).

Chapter 03. Broken Glass
Dear singer - never, I repeat, NEVER try to sing a ballad again. Satan forbid. Your "clear" singing is more scary than your pitiful growling. A dull melody and annoying banging on hi-hats in the background don't spoil this track much more in these circumstances.

Chapter 04. This World Is Mine
Very fine, disturbing and energetic duel between the left and the right stereo channels in the beginning of the track is soon wasted because of... Anybody wanna guess? Right. Here comes the funny croaking again. Ouch! All this very solid work of the rest of the band throughout the track destroyed by the vocalist. What a pity.

The moral of this story:
Replace the singer, guys, or send him on a singing (and growling) course or something.

InDePeNdEnCiA - "InDePeNdEnCiA"

Very amateurish rock (4/10)

Some compositions show some potential (tracks nos. 02 & 04 have quite catchy melodies, I guess), but very bad production, ugly sound, weak vocals and limited skills of the band waste it all. They have some interesting ideas (like, for example, use of Pachelbel's "Canon in D" played on synthesizer as a background for "Tanto Faz", or adding electronic samples here and there), but implementation of these ideas is just hopeless.

Learn and work hard guys, and maybe... in a distant future...? For now, this album does not qualify for repeated listening.

Paradeigma - "Galoperidol"

Terrible hip hop mixed with electronica (0/10)

Well known promoter of experimental scene in Urals, founder of Cuntroll unit decides to show his non-breakcore countenance. Galoperidol was originally recorded in 2007 but never released. Probably humanity wasn't ready for those kind of stuff. Now in 2010 when everyone is ready for everything, everyone saw everything and everyone knows everything we can give to you this extremely sad dose of glitchy-abstract sounds highly connected with depressive hip hop on highest level. The world will end tomorrow!

Terribly ugly hip-hop mixed with chaotic electronica. Avoid at all costs.

The album has been released by the 49manekinow.net netlabel and is available for downloading at archive.org in mp3 format.

Abogix (J.K.), the - "Domino Labyrinth, the"

Masterpiece with a single flaw (9/10)

Abogix at his best... except for the track no. 2. The singer's voice isn't interesting, the melody is dull. The instrumental version (no. 8) is great, so it's the singer, who ruins everything. Experiment failed, Mr. Reznamor. ;-)

But it's the only flaw on otherwise perfect album. Other tunes are great - dark, psychedelic, creative, entertaining. Abogix is a master of such music and this album only confirms this.

You can also buy a lossless version of this album on Jamendo for 10 euros.
