From Middle Earth to Outer Space: The Phoenix Foundation - "Hitchcock"

One more lucky find. It was posted on the channel presenting short films, which it is indeed. But at the same time this is a video to a song by a New Zealandish band The Phoenix Foundation. I've never heard of them, but judging from this song, this is a mistake I have to correct as soon as possible.

This is a truly brilliant video, combining very original animation with perfectly corresponding music. It was directed (or in this case rather "made") by Reuben Sutherland, a visual artist specialising in mixing up live action and animation.

And the music is also original. I guess it could be labeled "post rock", but it wouldn't do justice to this great piece. This is a combination of atmospheric instrumental rock fueled by prominent guitars with electronic sounds straight out of Jean-Michel Jarre's most "cosmic" tunes. The result is something I would call "space rock".

OK, enough talkingwriting. I have to book a ticket for a nightflight to Venus.

Z.o.Z. - "Morfina"

Not bad, but not very interesting either (5/10)

Mix of rock, trip hop and post rock with Polish lyrics. It's not bad, but at the same time not attractive enough to keep my attention focused. They claim they like to experiment, but I didn't hear many experiments on this album. I didn't find catchy melodies either. Lyrics? Correct, but forgettable. Vocals? Your ears won't hurt but nothing more. Gloomy atmosphere? Present, but I wasn't carried away.

To sum up: if you like the genre, you can check it out, but don't expect a masterpiece.

Plastic Evolution - "At A Wooden Desk"

Not catchy enough (6/10)

electric-acoustic-singer-songwriter-lo-fi-indie music written by a person in his room by touching strings, using vocal cords, arranging samples, clapping hands, hitting bottles and so on...

This is simple dreamy guitar pop rock. This is a professional recording and will find its fans for sure. For me, however, it is not catchy enough to keep my attention focused. The songs flow slowly and my eyelids get heavier and heavier... Good night.

By the way, this is just a half of the album you can get in other websites.

Coma Stereo - "Binary Endings"

Very good post rock (8/10)

"Binary endings" is an over 50 minutes of a very spatial, a bit nostalgic and melancholic sounds evoking such a bands as the silver mount zion, godspeed you! Black emperor, trans am and explosions in the sky. Sometimes ,when the forlorn vocal is present( "obsessions and a tulip"), it may be associated with xiu xiu, no twist or even The Cure.
Four musicians from Slovenia take us in a imaginative trip arousing a full scale of perceptible emotions and associated with their memories. A light electronic and an extensive passage created by guitars intertwine with mind-blowing, sometimes a bit brutal and dramatic mood. It`s a great challenge for a post-rock band to achieve a balance between an experimental guitar formulas and electronic-ambient threads. Coma Stereo gives it to you and for this reason it is an obligatory position for connoisseurs of the style.
Binary endings gives you a 50 minutes of sound which is a perfect connection between hypnotic and magic motives and dose of field recordings. So if you like to listen music full of sadness and filled with pain but with a ray of hope at once, don't hesitate to download this album. It's perfect music to listen in the dark and alienation.

Very good post rock album. Great gloomy atmosphere, depressive melodies. Highly recommended for fans of dark guitar music.

Skala - "Skalkulator"

Sitting on a fence, looking good (8/10)

The debut album of team the Skala "Skalkulator” saw the day light 5 years ago. Given by Underwater Music assembled on portal good reviews, m.in. Alternativepop.pl. Plate was given in traditional form only cd- r, she never was have throwed open in net. This good moment to garages "Skalkulator” in somewhat refreshed version settled in net. All has his beginning and end. We on end propose beginning this time.

Roger: all music & productions.
Sady: acustic drums.

Very good post rock, that is a cross-over between instrumental rock and electronica. Some tracks are more rock-based, some are more influenced by electronica, but each and every is creative, well recorded and has a nice melody. How would you classify it, depends heavily on a point of view, because all these songs are based on real instruments with addition of electronic sounds. Some could be even labeled as downtempo or even breakbeat, still belonging to rock genre, if seen from another perspective. Really quality blend - come taste it now.

BTW, nice use of my favorite didgeridoo.

If deja vu is a post-experience who repeats itself or is a similar repetitive action in our system so to speak. Then I find this life and its system we are living in, as one big deja vu experience I want to escape..... Today is all about making money and being someone. Companies and humans are killing each other for a name, for profit and land. Someone else are trying just to make a living, because they do not "fit in", in this moneymaking-drowning world. .... This music is about people, oppression and beings who are themselves.. And not tries to be someone else or manipulating for fame. .... Capitalism is just another dying breed is a side-project. Enjoy and download the music for free and leave a comment if you like!
Victor Soldéus.

Obligatory position for everyone who loves Come On Die Young by Mogwai. This is about oppression. This is about molestation. This is about people. This is about fear. This is atrabilious. This is about you. This is about me. This is about us.

Very dark and depressive guitar ambient with traces of noise. Quite captivating, but definitely not for everyone. This is rather difficult music, only for fans of strange sounds. Although, sometimes it gets too calm and repetitive (tracks 01 & 05 are just boring).

Skala - "Zaslona"

Great experimental rock (10/10)

W przeciwieƄstwie do poprzedniego albumu zespoƂu Skala "Lumina", ktĂłry byƂ projektem mocno studyjnym, na pƂycie "ZasƂona" większoƛć kompozycji powstaƂa podczas wspĂłlnych improwizacji.

Great experimental rock (or post rock, as electronic instruments are heavily used here). It's instrumental music, but despite having no vocals it's never boring. The tunes are atmospheric, the band is very creative in finding original sounds, so the result is very diverse and full of bright ideas. I highly recommend this album.

Depressive post rock (8/10)

It's great pleasure to have a chance to re-realase and distribute this album in Poland ... few more words about release soon ... now just enjoy with listening this stuff. Extremely sad, deep and anxious dose of experimental, post-rock, ambient music from Serbia.

This is depressive atmospheric post-rock of really high quality. Perfect as a soundtrack for suicide attempts.

Missing Host Band - "Dusk Gazing"

Very rough instrumental rock (6/10)

Very, very old tracks made of sounds of guitars directly connect in computer, synthetiser played on my computer keyboard, and various drums samples . If you like this, i will upload others.

It's very rough instrumental rock with traces of electronica. The songs are very demo-like from the technical and production side, but the melodies are really nice, although extremely simple. I didn't like only two tracks: "4 toufic" and "8 easy to popular". The first contains awful too loud high-frequency noises that are almost unbearable. And the second is too sweet and primitive - almost like it had barrel organ origins.

The rest of the tunes deserves strong 7/10, so the answer to the artist's question, whether he should upload more, is: "Please, do!"

Nie, dziekuje - "EP 1"

Two good tracks (6/10)
What does drummer do when he is fed up with hammering on hides? He became an enginer of space travels... in a walking tempo. How much does the devoid drums ambient-experimental heaven of MichaƂ Witkowski offer? You will find it out right now. If people are stars, then the space is crowded is in places. There are also nebulas of calm and pianos of emptiness. The first walk from the second is separated by four deep breaths. Because in autumn the rhythm is unnecessary to stroll.

The tracks no. 1 & 2 are very good experimental electroacoustic post rock tunes. Unfortunately the tracks no. 3 & 4 are worse. No. 3 sounds like poor people's Moonchild by King Crimson. And no. 4 is an example of very boring ambient. But tracks 1 & 2 are worth listening. Check them out.
