Melchiades Estrada Band, the - "Music of Youth"

Simple, catchy, too long (6/10)
Album de jeunesse. Toutes les musiques présentées ici ont été composées entre 14 et 19 ans par The Melchiades estrada Band.

The return of the '80s. Most of the tracks are nice - simple but catchy. But for me the album is too long - not all the tunes are equally interesting and somewhere around the 16th track one gets slowly bored.

However, this album proves that you do not need expensive equipment to make great electronic music. Of course, you can hear from the first second that it has been made on a home computer from the '80s. And so what? The sound is not everything. The melodies, the feeling are usually more important. And for these tracks the "cheap-old-80s" sound is like a spice in a dish.

Manta Raya - "Remix My Ass! Vol. 1"

Mostly dull electroclash (5/10)

MANTA RAYA is born in 2000, in Argentina. Mecha, George and Quique knew each other studying Visual Arts in Mar del Plata city. At that time, 1998, they played in different bands. This is how they shared their art and gigs and parties sometimes. After a while, destiny and the same love for music brought them back together. And they had no other choice but to do what they like the most. to Rock!! They've played in every single place they could. From the smallest shitty underground bar to big venues, clubs and festivals. In march '07 Manta Raya was selected by Paste Magazine and Coca Cola Company to be one of the independent artists promoted at Coca Cola's website. Finally their new album Yeah! was released in October 2007. Produced by Manta Raya. Mixed by MantaGeorge and Luciano Siclari. Mastered by Luciano Siclari. Supported by UMI ( Independents Musicians Union ). And one week after the release, they started their first European Tour performing in Berlin, Hamburg, London, Paris and Guadalajara.

I never listened to Manta Raya, so I cannot compare these remixes to their original versions. I will, therefore, judge them on their own merits.

Most of the remixes fall into electroclash genre, with accompaniment based on 8-bit - to a rather tiring effect. Dull punkish vocals combined with primitive disco-like beats add up to a really ugly whole.

The only two interesting tracks are nos. 02 & 08, because of much more intelligent, breakbeat-based instrumentals.

Rastadeush & Mr. Nooze - "Split"

Mr. Nooze wins (6/10)

Mr. Nooze - single producer, dj from Gdynia in Poland. Inspired by french music scene, and produce music in this french style (especially remixes). There's not much to say... more to listen: Mr. Nooze at Fairtilizer

Split album consisting of tunes by two electronic music artists - Rastadeush and Mr. Nooze. Each of them is represented by three tracks.

In my opinion, Mr. Nooze wins. His tracks are much more interesting, intelligently combining breakbeat, minimal and 8-bit. Rastadeush delivers more straightforward techno, very repetitive and lacking creativeness. Mr. Nooze would get 10 points from me, while Rastadeush only 4. I would love to hear a full length album from Mr. Nooze.

Chlopomania - "Lodowisko Remixes"

Be eco-friendly - remix your garbage (0/10)

Florian filsinger, Television Tom, Hydrator, Aqpa, Puzia remixes well known chlopomania track called Lodowisko.

It's a bland electroclash tune with extremely stupid lyrics that were meant to be funny, but failed miserably. The original mix is accompanied by several remixes of varying, but not so high, quality. It doesn't matter anyhow, because remixing such an atrocious piece of garbage like this one is pointless anyhow and does not qualify for listening. Even one star is too much for this - it deserves 0/5 rating.

Television Tom - "Static Action" [EP]

Two good, one bad (6/10)

Do you recall all these platform, adventure games? If not, "static action" will drag you away from reality for a literally few minutes and will haul you in rhythm of mad adventure held in lo-fi aesthetics. Seemingly, a short, simple and effortless single but in reality it constitutes very well-thought-out and interesting composition. Opening whole "runner" brings to mind a mythical game "dizzy" where a title character changes from lazy and outwardly calm egg into mad and full of beans runner who lark all obstacles and mysteries of level 1 without effort and in very fast rate. In "commander coma" he changes into detective who riddle mysteries of secret organization. A track "pilot ballon" which is closing this short album could be a brilliant ending of whole adventure, a final stage of the game. It could be a moment when all tension and emotions are slowly stalling, there are presenting the credits and demo- in which our character is getting on balloon and passes out. If there will be a reedition of some mythical platform game, "static action" or other tv tom`s recordings could be a perfect soundtrack. Highly prescribed!

This is a 3-track album of 8-bit techno. Unfortunately only two of the songs are good. The track no. 1 is too simple, with a primitive melody - completely devoid of creativeness. But still, I recommend to download and check this recording out, as the remainder of the album is quite the opposite. While still exploring the 8-bit realm, the tracks no. 2 & 3 are highly entertaining, if only someone is able to appreciate the deliberate use of lo-fi samples.

Ralp - "Vruoxoil"

8-bit - only partially successful (6/10)

Crazy and mad music which will make you feel giddy and totally wired. Sounds emanating from everywhere take you unawares and stick you a new dose of absolutely positive energy.

Raül Peix (Ralp). Multifaceted artist member of Device, Lowtoy, Distortled Box, Tricoma, NFFCTS, MicroBCN and NGFX, independent collectives dedicated to audiovisual creations. Under the same name, Ralp takes different paths in music, 3D, motion, graphic and installation. He creates 100% electronic music with an IDMcore aesthetic made with computer, some hardware, circuit bending toys, machines built from zero and 8 Bit productions with Nintendo Game Boy and Commodore 64. During his trajectory he has played in some events and festivals around Europe and in a lots of improvised "mini raves" in the streets. So far he has published sonorous material in some netlabels like Brainstormlab (London), Crazy-Language (Berlin), DexandtheCity (Letonia), 49 Manekinow (Polonia), Noise-Joy (USA), Spoomusic (USA) and Chippanze (Brasil).

This is typical 8-bit techno. Unfortunately only partially successful. Some tracks are interesting, well crafted, but others are dull and chaotic, sounding like if samples were placed in purely accidental order. Good ones: 01, 03, 04, 06, 09.

Lektropozitiv - "Early Works Unfinished"

Very good hardcore techno (8/10)
Lektropozitiv brings to you over 15 minutes of electro terror in john starlight style. Early works unfinished is a never finished and never mastered piece of noisy, terror/electro 8bit passage. There is no place for emotions and no time for rest. There is only Lektropozitiv, dark dancefloor and your sweat.

Very good hardcore techno. A little rough around the edges, but it's not a problem in this kind of music. The tunes are diverse, creative, full of energy and fun to listen to. Check this out!

Thalyla - "Records Of The Demon Hunting"

Strange minimalistic music (7/10)
Demon Hunting Soundtrack

It's nice but worse than last works of Thalyla.

1 Anneke in the Askani Wood - it's just boring ambient.
3 Howl is not a Horn - too chaotic. The pieces of the puzzle that were used just do not fit.

But the climax of the album, that is "6 Demon Outing" is great! Really scary tune perfectly illustrating the tune's and album's title. Church bells, demon's growls, apocalyptic sounds - a small (a minute and a half long!) gem.

The rest of the tracks are simply good, in the usual Thalyla's style. Not perfect but not bad either.

Oh, and if someone don't know the artist, Thalyla uses this formula for music: minimal + techno + electronica + industrial + some other smaller flavours. The result is usually very strange but tasty. However, for beginners I strongly recommend these Thalyla's albums: "EumeniNme" & "Defender Invader Nefander". They are masterpieces. The third best is "M.".

Nationale2 - "Meka Musik"

Minimalistic techno (7/10)

100% Lofi, sample and mastering 8-bit mono, this is the program you reserve this album resolutely Hard House. N2 has showed its good old AMIGA 500 to compose 12 tracks explosives. A beautiful demonstration as a minimum, it is possible to make it the most.

Very minimalistic techno. Simple means - a powerful effect. However, it is slightly too hardcore for me. The most of the tunes are too monotonous, especially tracks no. 5 & 7 - I didn't like them.

Nevertheless, if you like oldschool techno with strong beats - check it out.

paniq - "Neurons: Fire At Will"

Well crafted techno... but someone should ban vocoder (8/10)

"Neurons: Fire At Will" is an instrumental electronica album, containing songs written between 2004-2005. It consists of four sections, separated by style: a.) uplifting/quirky, b.) straight four to the floor, c.) funny tracks, d.) ambient and downtempo.

Enjoy.

It's a very good techno album. As the artist says in the description, this recording contains a mix of tunes in different styles. But that's not a problem. All tracks are creative, production is flawless - just read the other reviews. So why such a low rating? The answer is: a vocoder. Someone should ban this.

I really hoped that the most pitiful invention in the history of music, which is able to kill even the most interesting tune, passed away in disgrace along with the 80s. I was wrong. Lately it crawled out of its grave and started to haunt different musical genres, scaring people with its decaying flesh and rotting bowels. I know some people like it, but for me it is pitiful. It has its place in Kraftwerk's tunes, but that's it. Really. We have 21st century, for Zeus' sake. Your song won't turn into another "Das Model" just because you use a vocoder. So don't. Save the mankind.

Fortunately, only a few tracks on this album are vocoder-"enhanced", so I encourage you to check it out, cause except from this issue it is really good.

Update: After re-listening to this album I came to the conclusion that the above review is too harsh. I still hate vocoder, but firstly - it is used only in two tracks and secondly - its use on these tracks is justified, because the artist tries to imitate the sound of 80s. Therefore, I raised my rating from 6 to 8.

And once again I highly recommend this album - mixing so many genres shows how talented paniq is. From breakbeat, through 8-bit, plain techno, crazy and funny experiments in the middle up to the ending downtempo tunes - all is great. Every genre that he touches turns into gold. I dare him to try some Village People kitsch.
