One more lucky find. It was posted on the channel presenting short films, which it is indeed. But at the same time this is a video to a song by a New Zealandish band The Phoenix Foundation. I've never heard of them, but judging from this song, this is a mistake I have to correct as soon as possible.
This is a truly brilliant video, combining very original animation with perfectly corresponding music. It was directed (or in this case rather "made") by Reuben Sutherland, a visual artist specialising in mixing up live action and animation. And the music is also original. I guess it could be labeled "post rock", but it wouldn't do justice to this great piece. This is a combination of atmospheric instrumental rock fueled by prominent guitars with electronic sounds straight out of Jean-Michel Jarre's most "cosmic" tunes. The result is something I would call "space rock". OK, enough |

Obsessions - "Obsessions" [EP]
A classy rock / punk rock offering (8/10)
This is a really surprisingly good minialbum from the Polish band Obsessions. I know nothing about them except that supposedly this is a side project of the three musicians connected with another Polish act The Black Tapes. They claim they play punk rock, but in my humble opinion this is just a straightforward rock. It is uptempo and loud, definitely influenced by punk, but lacking punkish aggressiveness. Anyhow, they are good. They know how to play, the songs are well recorded, riffs are great, vocal lines are catchy, the singer's singing manner is adequately slovenly. No genre bending here - pure rock at its best. So keep rocking, boys - it is nice to hear such classic approach for a change.
The album has been released on vinyl only (sic!) by the Antena Krzyku label and you cannot officially download it in any digital format. You can buy a vinyl in some online stores for around 7 euros (serpent.pl, seeyousoon.pl). But you have to act fast, as only 250 records have been made. You can also listen to the full album online on Bandcamp, but downloads are switched off. Of course, it is possible to download it anyhow in Bandcamp's preview quality (mp3 @ 128 kbit). No option to pay the artist this way, though. What a pity. |

YouTube sidebar recommends: The Grates - "Turn Me On"
Damn you, YouTube sidebar! I have some work to do, you know?!
This time simply a fantastic video to the song (not bad either) by the Australian act The Grates. It was directed by Dimitri Basil. Dimitri is not on Wikipedia (yet), but you can read an online interview with the guy. I hope his future career will be as successful as this clip. |

Music is well, thank you: Selah Sue - "Raggamuffin"
Some people like to complain that true music died and all that contemporary artists produce is shit. Usually it is strangely related to those people getting older and becoming less open, more nostalgic and focused on the past. Well... What can you do? The world moves on.
However, as long as you can still top the charts just with a good melody, powerful voice and acoustic guitar, I officially announce: the Music is well, thank you for your concern. OK, good looks won't hurt, either. ;-P |

Peszek, Maria - "Maria Awaria" (2008)
Maria Peszek is a highly acclaimed Polish singer/songwriter. She is considered to be controversial, especially by right-wing retards and tabloids, because she is not afraid to openly discuss - both in lyrics to her songs and in interviews - themes such as sex, faith, patriotism and mental diseases. Each of her three albums was a commercial success, at the same time being praised by the critics and receiving many awards in her native Poland. She sings exclusively in Polish.
Maria Awaria (Maria the Failure) is a loose concept album about sex, love and femininity. All lyrics are in Polish and they are really good, witty and powerful, being an important factor in making these songs as awesome as they are. Therefore, this album may not appeal to non-Polish speaking public, as some tracks are built around lyrics with musical background playing only a small part ("Milosc w systemie Dolby Surround", "Reks", "Ladne slowa to"). Nevertheless, I still encourage you to check this album out, because many other tracks are brilliant from the musical side too (e.g. "Rosol", "Hujawiak", "Maria Awaria", "Muchomory"). From the musical perspective this is a pop (or pop rock) record, with some jazz and modern electronica influences. The album is masterfully produced by one of the best Polish producers and electronica composers, Andrzej Smolik, so the said musical background is full of pleasant surprises on many occasions. Many of Peszek's vocal lines are catchy as hell too and should be enjoyable even without understanding of her lyrics. Support artists, not recording industry Pay the artists directly. They do not profit from CD sales. If you buy brand new mainstream albums in regular record stores (no matter whether online or offline, CDs or downloads), almost all the money goes to the recording industry mafia and is later used for committing crimes such as unlawful harassment of fans and bribing authorities to implement changes in law, which would infringe basic human rights. If you really want to support mainstream artists (and you should, if you love their music!), go to concerts or buy merchandise off the official websites. If you can afford buying music, but it is not possible to pay a particular artist without a mafia tribute, consider supporting some independent artists instead. You can find many great acts on such websites as magnatune.com, jamendo.com, cdbaby.com, bandcamp.com, megatotal.pl. Supporting independent artists helps fight the recording industry mafia. Abogix (J.K.), the - "Friends"
Work of a genius - a feast for the ears (8/10)
Abogix is a genius. Or he sold his soul to the devil. How else could you explain the fact that this man composes and records three perfect albums in half a year? |
![]() [mirror @ archive.org] [Artist's Myspace] |
This record is one of his best. It's a great mixture of electronica, rock, jazz, even some traces of industrial. All is perfectly blended and flawlessly produced. It's simply a true feast for the ears. The music is beautiful, intelligent, original, surprising - everything is perfect on this album. I have only two complaints: first of all - IT'S TOO SHORT!!!!! ;-). And secondly, I don't like long tracks. And this one could have been cut very easily, as it comprises of several different tunes. Of course I don't mean putting silence between them - they are perfectly combined and it is great, but each tune could be just put in his own track. It would be easy to find one's favourite part, repeat them, compare different melodies and so on. Oh, and I love the cover - very funny and perfectly corresponds with the mood of this album. But this is also usual with Abogix - covers of his albums are always great. PS. Why on earth I wrote all the above? I could just write: "Just another album from Abogix." and everything would be perfectly clear. ;-) |

Therapy? - "Iron Man" (live in Firenze, Italy, 1994)
Therapy? is an outstanding hard rock / metal band from Ireland. Influenced by such stylistically diverse bands as Black Sabbath or Hüsker Dü they managed to build their own distinct sound, based on a wall of noise constructed from loud guitars and powerful drums on the one hand and melodic vocal lines, catchy tunes and clever emotional lyrics passionately delivered by the singer Andy Cairns on the other hand.
A concert bootleg is probably not the very best start if you do not know Therapy? yet, in which case I encourage you to check out the albums Troublegum and Infernal Love, but should be interesting for every fan of this great band. The highlights of this album are rare songs Auto Surgery and Totally Random Man coming from an early EP, a poem by A.A. Milne sang a capella, a crazy cover of the Black Sabbath's Iron Man with the changed lyrics, an early version of Me Vs. You - again with different lyrics and finally extended Lunacy Booth with an insane speech of Andy Cairns. This release of the 1994 Firenze concert has been compiled from two separate sources: 1. "Shock Treatment" [bootleg CD, Octopus Octo 010] 2. "Iron Man" [bootleg CD, On Stage Records CD/ON2339] The first source had inferior sound quality, but it included 2 more songs. The second source had two songs missing (Isolation and Nowhere), but its sound quality was better and it included longer breaks between several songs. Tracklist: 1. Therapy? - Stop It You're Killing Me [03:24] 2. Therapy? - Trigger Inside [04:04] 3. Therapy? - Potato Junkie [02:49] 4. Therapy? - Auto Surgery [02:21] 5. Therapy? - Die Laughing [03:09] 6. Therapy? - "Infernal Love" (1995)
Therapy? is an outstanding hard rock / metal band from Ireland.
The final vocal line on Infernal Love might be "There is a light at the end of the tunnel," but there's no denying that Infernal Love is anything but optimistic; it's an unrelentingly dark and sometimes bluntly turgid record. Anyone familiar with the band had grown accustomed to Andy Cairns' spins on depression, anger, bitterness, and self-destruction, but even the most devoted listener probably screamed "Snap out of it!" while first listening to this third record. Darker chords and slower tempos prevail, and the pop-punk hooks are all but washed away. The sequentially buried, bouncing "Loose" is an anomaly, sounding like a refugee from Troublegum that reads like a dystopian "Jack and Diane." Other than that, it's nothing but despair and heartache. Further, "Combined read/write offset correction" set to "0" probably means there are some missing samples (but it does not mean these differences are audible - it just means the copy is not "exact"). I carefully listened to this rip and I heard no audible ripping errors. CUETools database contains 4 different pressings of this album and all the checksums are different to this rip. I suppose it means this release is from another pressing (or maybe it's the result of the wrong offset set in EAC?). Interested? Therapy? - "Lonely, Cryin', Only" [CDS] (1998)
Therapy? is an outstanding hard rock / metal band from Ireland. Influenced by such stylistically diverse bands as Black Sabbath or Hüsker Dü they managed to build their own distinct sound, based on a wall of noise constructed from loud guitars and powerful drums on the one hand and melodic vocal lines, catchy tunes and clever emotional lyrics delivered by the singer Andy Cairns on the other hand.
"Lonely, Cryin', Only" comes from the Semi-Detached album and it was released on A&M Records on May 18, 1998. This single reached number 32 in the UK Singles Chart. Semi-Detached is not the best album by Therapy? and "Lonely, Cryin', Only" is not the best song on this album. Still, it leaves many contemporary rockers' efforts behind. But forget the single track - you can find it on the regular album, anyhow. The B-Side tracks are much more interesting and should be more than enough for a fan to get this single. "High Noon" is a cover of the song by DJ Shadow, a prominent DJ and electronic music artist. It sounds like a typical Therapy?'s song, while still being faithful to the original and catchy as hell. Brilliant work. The remaining two songs are reworked versions of their past masterpieces, so they should be interesting for fans as well. Tracklist: 1. Lonely, Cryin', Only [02:40] 2. High Noon [05:09] 3. Diane (new recording) [06:23] 4. Teethgrinder (new recording) [03:20] Playing Time.........: 17:34 |

Beware (1/10)

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Lousy voice, terrible drums, uninteresting melodies. Guitar is quite good, but all is wasted because of badness of other elements. Poor production tops it off, but the biggest problem is lack of vocal and arranging talent. Maybe the lyrics are impressive? I don't know it, because I can't speak French.

TAT - "Quinta Essentia"
Good gothic album (7/10)
Lacrimosa meets Dead Can Dance meets Einsturzende Neubauten - these are the first associations that came to my mind after listening to this album. But TAT is still quite original. For example, use of a classical guitar gives a very interesting effect. Dark ghotic tunes - very haunting. The only downside is the terrible French accent in English songs.

Tryad - "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)"
Strong debiut (7/10)
I started my adventure with Try^d with their third album "Listen". I was completely mesmerized and shocked by the quality and beauty of this album. Their debut "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)" is of course weaker than "Listen" but this is still beautiful music for every fan of triphop or atmospheric rock/pop. I have one complaint - I don't like the voice of the singer on "The Final Rewind". But apart from that - great job. I gave 7 points, but that's only because this album is followed by "Listen". Let's say it's 7 points on "Try^d scale".

Abogix (J.K.), the - "Fantasmagoria"
Good psychedelic electronica (8/10)
Abogix doesn't drop below a certain level (a very high level for many others). However, I consider this album to be weaker than "Tales of mystery and imagination" and "Signs". I don't know why... Maybe there are too many elements that distract you and you cannot simply drift with a melody. Or maybe some of these elements just don't fit...? But still - 8 points. And of course I still recommend it to all fans of intelligent electronic music.

Hype - "Just A Catwalk From Heaven"
One great track + four decent ones (7/10)
[Artist's Myspace] |
"Ain't That Far" - I recommend this track to every true rock fan. Really great song. The others are nice, but not so catchy. They are just ordinary rock songs lacking freshness but "Ain't That Far" definitely will stay for good on my 'Favorites' playlist. Although I must say that after several times I started to like all the five. I just had to give the others some time, because they are not immediate hits.

Hype - "Lies And Speeches"
Very good REM-like and Live-like rock (9/10)

Association with REM is obvious. But I do not say these guys are plagiarists. I say that to get them people's attention. They just explore a similar area of rock music and the vocalist has a voice resembling that of Michael Stipe. I will not be original either, saying that I agree with everybody that "My Innocence" is definitely the greatest song on this album. But I will say more - it is so awesome that it would be high on any list of the greatest rock hits of all time - if only more people had a chance to listen to it.
Apart from REM, several tracks remind me of Live and I think Hype is even more similar to Live than to REM. Especially with regard to "My Innocence", but also "Anybody here", which is almost as good as "My Innocence". Both songs could be placed on "The Distance To Here" right beside "The Dolphin's Cry" and nobody would notice any difference in quality. In my opinion Hype has a potential for a big career - not only in France but on international scale.
And one more thing - how stupid one has to be to rate the music album by the quality of the cover? Maybe such people should move to the graphical arts website? So, 10 points for "My Innocence" and "Anybody here", 7 points for the rest. Overall: 8,5. I must choose 8 or 9 when rating, so I choose 9 - those two songs are REALLY great. Check them out - it is free, remember? And also check out their second album "Just A Catwalk From Heaven", especially track no. 2 "Ain't That Far". One more precious gem.

The album has been published on Jamendo under the Creative Commons license and later removed from this website. Fortunately, a CC license is irrevocable and the recording has been archived by the one and only archive.org Internet library. You can listen to the album online or download it in mp3 or ogg format - all of this legally.

Sans Bagage - "Tant pis pour la lune"
Mostly boring tunes... Easy to listen, easy to forget... (6/10)
Definitely better than their previous album. Professionally played, sang and produced, but still lacks the main feature of good poprock albums - catchy melodies (although one can see a development here). Easy to listen, easy to forget. [mirror @ archive.org] | [Myspace]
