One more lucky find. It was posted on the channel presenting short films, which it is indeed. But at the same time this is a video to a song by a New Zealandish band The Phoenix Foundation. I've never heard of them, but judging from this song, this is a mistake I have to correct as soon as possible.
This is a truly brilliant video, combining very original animation with perfectly corresponding music. It was directed (or in this case rather "made") by Reuben Sutherland, a visual artist specialising in mixing up live action and animation. And the music is also original. I guess it could be labeled "post rock", but it wouldn't do justice to this great piece. This is a combination of atmospheric instrumental rock fueled by prominent guitars with electronic sounds straight out of Jean-Michel Jarre's most "cosmic" tunes. The result is something I would call "space rock". OK, enough |

Karmuazine - "Between the Lines"
Classy trip-hop offering (8/10)
This a classy trip-hop offering. Great female vocals, fine English accent (at least from my non-native perspective), professional production, catchy melodies, dreamy atmosphere. Highly recommended for fans of trip-hop or simply good pop music. The album is available for free under CC licenses on Jamendo. You can also buy a lossless FLAC version on Bandcamp. Bownik, Adam Certamen - "Magma"
Fine ambient electronica (8/10)
Fine ambient electronica. Especially fans of space music, the sound of 80s and such artists as Klaus Schulze or J.M. Jarre should be delighted. The only thing I didn't like is a track no. 2. It's a short piano miniature and while Adam is a skilled player, this piece lacks the power of his space-musical compositions. [mirror @ archive.org] | [Artist's Website] SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTISTS

Surreal sandwich (9/10)

Tryad - "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)"
Strong debiut (7/10)
I started my adventure with Try^d with their third album "Listen". I was completely mesmerized and shocked by the quality and beauty of this album. Their debut "Tryad Demo (Public Domain)" is of course weaker than "Listen" but this is still beautiful music for every fan of triphop or atmospheric rock/pop. I have one complaint - I don't like the voice of the singer on "The Final Rewind". But apart from that - great job. I gave 7 points, but that's only because this album is followed by "Listen". Let's say it's 7 points on "Try^d scale".

Abogix (J.K.), the - "Fantasmagoria"
Good psychedelic electronica (8/10)
Abogix doesn't drop below a certain level (a very high level for many others). However, I consider this album to be weaker than "Tales of mystery and imagination" and "Signs". I don't know why... Maybe there are too many elements that distract you and you cannot simply drift with a melody. Or maybe some of these elements just don't fit...? But still - 8 points. And of course I still recommend it to all fans of intelligent electronic music.

Interesting electronic tunes (8/10)
Interesting instrumental tunes, balancing on the border of electronica and rock. What a pity the album is only 5 minutes long.

Magnetar / Toltek Industries - "Liftoff"
Mixed feelings... (5/10)
I have mixed feelings after listening to this album. Some tracks are very good, some are rather boring for me. But overall, the album would earn maybe even 7 points, if not... two issues. Firstly, the sound volume variations. Some parts are so quiet, you must turn the volume up to the maximum. Then, you are attacked by sounds so loud that you cannot hear your own thoughts. So listening to this album requires constant struggle with a volume slider. It is a very stupid and annoying "feature" of some records, which on this one is pushed to extremes. Secondly, who in their right mind would name such song as no. 3 on this album "Elven Lore"? What these guitars, drums and dark mood have to do with elves? "Orcish pit" would be a much more appropriate name. If the dear author wants to hear music that fits a theme of elves, I will recommend albums of Enya or "Robin Hood" by Clannad. Of course I did not really lowered my rating because of the name of the track, but because of the sound volume problem. The album has been published under the Free Art License, which is more or less equivalent to the CC BY-SA license. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT ARTISTS

Sinewave - "Zombastic? Fantastic!" [SP]
Catchy instrumental rock single (9/10)
A catchy little song that is used in the very enjoyable free online flash game Zombie Minesweeper. The disturbing atmosphere corresponds well with the game's theme and the way of playing. For those that played the game extensively it may be a little bit too much to hear it again (and again and again...), but all the others should definitely check it out, because it is a very fine piece of electronic rock.
The album is available on Bandcamp for USD 1 (yes, for one dollar!) in a variety of formats, including a FLAC version. You can also listen to the full album before making a decision on purchase. [Artist's website] |

Bownik, Adam Certamen - "Mars Global Inspiration"
Nice ambient electronica (6/10)
Nice ambient electronica. Especially fans of space music, the sound of 80s and such artists as Klaus Schulze and J.M. Jarre should be delighted. However, turn off the player before the 4th track starts. It's a terrible song with a singer's voice transformed with a vocoder. The voice is very ugly and on top of that the singer has a terrible English accent. Avoid at all costs. [Artist's website / Myspace] ![]() |

Eclectek - "Groove On"
They are getting better and better (10/10)
I watch Eclectek's development for several years now and I am more and more impressed. Their works were interesting from the very beginning (these old albums have been unfortunately removed from Jamendo), but they work hard and with each new album they cross new borders. And I really like where they are heading. They started with very eclectic :) mixture of rock, electronica, hip-hop and funk. But on this two-track minialbum they step deeper into the realm of rock music. And they really should feel at home here. Both tracks are outstanding - highly energetic, with strong aggressive female vocals and ultra catchy melodies. Their rock is spiced up with electronica, but in perfect proportions, without turning their music into some campy electroclash shit. The bands that immediately come to mind are Guano Apes and Skunk Anansie. Do not get me wrong; I do not bring these names as a claim of unoriginality - everybody has some influences. I just want to tell you two things: one - what type of music you can expect, because "rock" is too general and "alternative rock" is not only an extremely stupid, but also a meaningless label; and the second - they already reached the level of these bands. This is not some amateurish effort rated "10/10", because it is "good for non-professionals" (the usual argument of bad artists complaining on low ratings). This recording gets "10/10", because you could mistake it for a new Skunk Anansie's single. This is how good it is. My only complaint is a usual one in such cases - IT IS TOO SHORT! I WANT MORE! To sum up - wanna hear some really fresh super catchy top quality heavy rock? Check out this album. [Artist's website] |

Z.o.Z. - "Morfina"
Not bad, but not very interesting either (5/10)
Mix of rock, trip hop and post rock with Polish lyrics. It's not bad, but at the same time not attractive enough to keep my attention focused. They claim they like to experiment, but I didn't hear many experiments on this album. I didn't find catchy melodies either. Lyrics? Correct, but forgettable. Vocals? Your ears won't hurt but nothing more. Gloomy atmosphere? Present, but I wasn't carried away. To sum up: if you like the genre, you can check it out, but don't expect a masterpiece. dK - "Electroglamour And Infinite Sadness"
Zuppa Romana (6/10)
I've got mixed feelings after listening to this album. What are "mixed feelings"? There is this popular joke: "mixed feelings are when you're watching your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new Ferrari". Well... Maybe. But for me it's also "hearing great music spoiled by a bad singer with a terrible English accent". Why on Earth so many people feel they have to sing in English, even if they lack skills? Somebody kidnapped your mother-in-law and threatens to throw her off a cliff, if you start singing in your native language? Ooops! Bad example. Anyhow... Everything else, apart from the vocalist's work, is at least good on this album. Great dark atmosphere, catchy melodies, very fine distorted guitars, nice electronic effects put in just right places. Just listen to these three instrumental pieces: 06, 08 & 12. Very interesting dark electronica, isn't it? Only maybe production is not up to par on several tracks, but not below my level of tolerance. And then... the singer. His voice is weak and from time to time he is almost out-of-tune. I could tolerate it, if this was his only problem. But the true disaster is his English accent. Why not to sing in Italian? Somebody told them only italo-disco is permitted in Italian? OK, the sound of English is great, it is an easy language to sing and write lyrics, but it makes sense only if the vocalist is able to learn a decent accent! Otherwise, just stick with your native language and the effect will be infinitely better. Because for now, it's just "Zuppa Romana". Of course, I can recommend this album to people who don't know English, or are unable to hear differences in English accents, because the instrumental part is very good. What's the genre? A dark synthpop / electro with industrial feel to it - a mix of Depeche Mode and Oomph! for me. By the way, speaking of Oomph!... Somehow they are not ashamed to sing in German. Instead of embarrassing themselves with "Änglisch"... Apart from Jamendo, you can also download it directly from the artist at Bandcamp for free or for a donation in a variety of formats, including lossless FLAC version. Strangely, this release is governed by a different CC license: ![]() |

Prodigy, the - "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" (2004)
The Prodigy are an English electronic dance music group formed by Liam Howlett in 1990 in Braintree, Essex. Along with Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and The Crystal Method, as well as other acts, members of the Prodigy have been credited as pioneers of the big beat genre which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s and 2000s. They have sold over 25 million records worldwide. Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned is just underwhelming. For a group that has historically specialized in getting your attention any way it possibly could, the fact that I found many of the tracks to be predictably rote is probably as damning an indictment as I can offer. The Prodigy have made a career out of consistently upping the ante with every single release: the rave landmark Experience was followed by the more expansive, more ambitious Music for the Jilted Generation, which was followed by the leaner, angrier Fat of the Land. This is the first Prodigy album that does not in some way build of its predecessor, and it suffers. Certainly, Fat of the Land II would have been an uninspiring choice, but it seems as if this album is more concerned with abjuring the regrettable decisions of the past few years than in building a new a new and dynamic sound. Interested? Ask Uncle Google the magic question:
karaspunk rorny "2004.08 - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (XLCD 183.)" -"trigger inside"
Watch out - in the very popular and easily available in the Internet rip of the Japanese release [2004.08 - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (Sony SRCP 373)] one of the tracks is not lossless - it's a recoded mp3 (10 - You'll Be Under My Wheels.flac). This rip is popular as it has an additional track. So my recommendation is to download XLCD 183. rip and then add "13 - More Girls.flac" from the Sony SRCP 373 rip.
For the faulty rip ask Uncle Google this magic question:
