FusionArt - "FusionArt" [EP]

Classy electronica (10/10)
Piece of beautiful music introducing into the world of senses and instincts. Beautiful intelligent dance music straight from capital city of Poland. FusionArt is an duo from Warsaw which decided to takes you for a short trip (20 minutes) over the most tasty pieces of IDM style. As opposed to style created by our artist Grammar, FusiosArt didn't construct claustrophobic spaces, there is no cavalcades of irregular beats (maybe sometimes, but they are not chaotic). Every little sound creates a new beautiful landscape. Sometimes you can see cloudness, serene skies, sometimes you can see beautiful places, forests, valleys, combs and foreign cities from the bird's-eye view. Sometimes this music reminds box full of birds, sometimes reminds abandoned, old, sad house...but you can only hear and see those things... you can't touch them. It's look like a guys from FusionArt strikes a funny medium between happy, heartsome, jocund idm and his unhappy, melancholic, deep side. This fusion art release reminds us best works such giants of glitch / idm / ambient as proem, phonem or arovane. Highly recommended piece of sounds.

Classy intelligent electronica, combining ambient, glitch, breakbeat. Catchy tunes, good production, interesting ideas. Go for it!

Piece of melancholic, emotional and very interesting experiments straight from Spain. Obertura is an masterpiece work of young artist called Lupus and we are very proud that we can show this debut release to you! This very mature album sounds somewhere between avant garde / idm / glitch / concrete music. Sounds flirt amongst, they brushes, crashes, blend in, connect and melt in sometimes melodic, sometimes unmelodic structures. In few songs you can hear some of live instruments. Would you like to find them?

Great ambient / downtempo / experimental electronica. The artist really knows how to keep your attention, what is not always easy in this genre. The tunes are slightly melancholic, yet energetic. I highly recommend it even to those who do not like such music too much - maybe you will change your mind after this one.

Thalyla - "Records Of The Demon Hunting"

Strange minimalistic music (7/10)
Demon Hunting Soundtrack

It's nice but worse than last works of Thalyla.

1 Anneke in the Askani Wood - it's just boring ambient.
3 Howl is not a Horn - too chaotic. The pieces of the puzzle that were used just do not fit.

But the climax of the album, that is "6 Demon Outing" is great! Really scary tune perfectly illustrating the tune's and album's title. Church bells, demon's growls, apocalyptic sounds - a small (a minute and a half long!) gem.

The rest of the tracks are simply good, in the usual Thalyla's style. Not perfect but not bad either.

Oh, and if someone don't know the artist, Thalyla uses this formula for music: minimal + techno + electronica + industrial + some other smaller flavours. The result is usually very strange but tasty. However, for beginners I strongly recommend these Thalyla's albums: "EumeniNme" & "Defender Invader Nefander". They are masterpieces. The third best is "M.".

Phon - "Beatles Are Dead"

Better than the original versions! (9/10)
"remixes the beatles"
a recent attempt with some interesting ideas

These remixes are amazing. I love the way the artist treated these legendary compositions. Everyone tries to play the Beatles "with respect" and the covers are inferior. But Phon does not have any complexes, he approached these masterpieces with an empty --- err, I mean open --- mind and he won!

I love so many ideas on this album. On "Yesterday" I love heavy guitars and growling in choruses - very surprising in a song that was once a ballad. Use of a symphonic orchestra in "Day in a life" may seem a bit strange firstly, but as the track unfolds, you begin to comprehend and appreciate the idea that Phon asked musicians to swap their instruments for this one session. On "Come together" mixing John's & Paul's voices with Britney Spears' "Ooops I did it again" was just another master's move. You feel this tune should have always sounded this way! Yodelling on "Helter Skelter" fits perfectly the awkward German language version of lyrics, autotranslated with Babelfish. The choir of drunken Afghan talibs is a great counterpoint to Lennon's piano played on fast forward on "Eleanor Rigby". I also like their funny English accents and how they replaced "Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door" with "Waits at the window, keeping the head of George W. in a jar by the door". I could go on like this for an hour, there are so many fresh concepts here, giving the listener fresh look on these thousand-times heard songs.

One thing I didn't like is replacing the original vocal line with an opera-singing on "Yellow Submarine". But maybe that's because I don't like opera.

So, to summarize: Everybody! Please welcome Phon, the remixing master!

And I'm waiting for the followup album: "Phon the Rolling Stone" with his versions of Satisfaction, Angie and so on... Maybe with a guest appearance by Kokkaljos? I'm asking for too much, I know...

Macroform - "Your Heart Is A Transceiver"

Fantastic downtempo/ambient (9/10)
Macroform creates ambient, and experimental instrumental music with electronic and acoustic instruments. Many content creators have Macroform's music to be suitable for creative media productions including films, podcasts, games, and mixed media projects. Contact me regarding usage permission.

Macroform resides in Troy, Ohio, USA. He is a musician who explores sound and experiments with a broad range of instruments including guitars, old Casio keyboards, African drums and percussion and found sounds and synthesizers. contact: paulshuler at gmail dot com

This album is full of fantastic downtempo / ambient tunes. Sometimes a little experimental, but still smooth - no hardcore here.

Great catchy melodies, nice soothing atmosphere, fine use of real instruments (or really really good samples). Never boring, like so many bad ambient productions.

Just a pure feast for yer ears.

Simon says: Check it out now!

The highlights include:
1 Cold Day
2 Cool Grass
3 Canister
5 Leaves Fall

P.S.
Why not 10? 10 is given too often on Jamendo. Note that good albums start at 7... What's use for rating if every album gets 10?

Very fine ambient-based glitch (9/10)

[Attribution-No Derivative Works 2.5 Poland]
With great pleasure we give in your hands debut EP of young American artist hidden under GRAMMAR nickname. Artist penetrates cold and distant areas of idm / glitch / abstract sounds establishing to scapes created by Autechre duo. Grammar ep gives us 20 minutes of highly organised chaos. You may ask: organised chaos? Yes! Ostensible minimalism and freezing cold compositions intertwine with highly extended and complex metalurgical backgrounds, spaces and surfaces. Unequal, rough beat blends with all kinds of cracks, glitches, snaps, clicks and smashes generating unique shape of records created by young American. Grammar first ep is dose of intelligent, melancholic electronics filled with tronic emotions. If you ever saw music in colours, Grammar sounds looks like blue light illuminating digital palettes of ice and mechanical colors.

Very fine ambient-based glitch. Calm and disturbing at the same time. Experimental, yet surprisingly accessible. Highly recommended work.

Rastadeush - "Night Is Too Short"

Energetic techno - but not all tracks are equally fine (6/10)

second release at 49manekinow.net [49mannequines.net]. dirty astmatic terror electro-tech/techno from south silesia in poland. "night is too short" is LP recorded in 2006 by young silesian hooligan RASTADEUSH

It's energetic techno, mixing breakbeat, electro, dance - but not all tracks are equally fine. Almost half of the album (01, 03, 08, 10, 13-14) contains primitive, repetitive dance and electro pieces. But the rest is much much better - still energetic and danceable, but catchy and creative at the same time. So I still recommend checking this album out - some of the tracks are top class. Rastadeush is really talented, if only he stopped trying to satisfy primitive disco lovers.

Williamson - "A Few Things To Hear Before We All Blow Up"

Thank gods for a review system (8/10)

Full of beautiful hooks and entrancing rhythms, A Few Things To Hear Before We All Blow Up is the "electronic-indie-space-pop," release from a group of extremely talented musician-hermits from Berkeley, California. Like silk from a spider's butt, Williamson spins out glistening strands of melody and emotion that slowly evolve into gorgeously mesmerizing configurations of sound. Listeners have described it as being "the soundtrack to my brain waves" and "drenched in gentleness." Highly recommended for fans of Sugar Plant, Four Tet, Marumari, Sigur Ros, and Transient Waves.

Thank god for a review system!

Why? Because this album did not catch my ear on the first listen. I thought "nice, pleasant, too smooth". And would maybe ignore it, but I looked through the enthusiastic reviews and decided to give it another try. Good for me.

Because this is really very good record! I will not go deep into details, because my predecessors said it all. It's flawlessly recorded downtempo, with very classical - I'd say - approach: without many strange sounds, broken beats, experiments but with real instruments. Very calm, atmospheric and soothing music. It may be too warm and peaceful for some, but everyone must admit that this is first-class recording. Check it out. I won't mention particular tracks, because this is very even album.

Antybiotix - "Flying Inside Your Mind"

Nice calm electronica (8/10)
Few years ago, few quiet people from few small cities in Poland meet together to give free rein to them creative minds. Some of them was connected with reggae scene, some of them are polish pioneers of experimental / noise formulas. They grasp some vibrant instruments some electronic machines and they started to play. Flying inside your mind is an effect of them seekings. Beautiful, deep, narcotic trip into your mind kept in experimental dub style. Slow diving waves of sounds intertwine with psychedelic reggae spaces, psychedelic reggae turn into experimental dub structures, dub forms changes into sounds which could be described as ancestors of dubstep. Highly recommended stuff for people who like to chill.

Nice electronica mixing dubstep and downtempo.

Niko - "Lost Experiments"

Good and diverse techno / electronica (7/10)

Lost Experiments is the result of some musical experiments I made between 2005 and 2007 with synths, vst and loops. I decided to call these tracks "lost experiments", because, due to a problem on my old desktop pc, I supposed to have lost these tracks, but some days ago I found again them and I provided to complete some of them. The tracks are an incredible mix of ambient moods and sounds, alternative style and many many experiments... So, you could find some of these songs strange and difficult to listen, but all I wanted to do was to create something original and different from usual songs. I hope you'll enjoy this album... And if you want to, you could also write a bad or negative comment on it. No problem about it... They're just experiments!

Good and diverse techno / electronica album, successfully mixing many genres - pure techno, ambient, space music, downtempo. Not as experimental as the artist claims, though.

For me the best were space music tracks, especially no. 6 - "Beyond The Clouds" - really great melody here. And the least successful were simple techno pieces no. 04 & 05 - repetitive, with boring tunes and beats.

Overall - nice effort, worth listening / downloading.

Etherdust - "At Someone Else's Funeral" [EP]

Average electronic industrial (6/10)

A small EP with three industrial/electronic/rock tracks.

Quite a mediocre effort. The tunes are catchy, but bad production, mixing, uninteresting vocals and complete lack of originality ruin the positive impression. Nevertheless, if it is only the first demo of a new still-learning band, this project may develop into something interesting. But for the time being they sound like a Stabbing Westward cover-band.

More detailed comments:
1 "Before It Breaks Down" - it's the worst track on this EP, mostly because of the poor mixing. The sound of cymbals that can be heard from about 1 minute into the track onward is fully placed in the left channel instead of being mixed in stereo. This is very annoying effect - I almost felt like listening to the first faulty stereo recordings from the sixties. Very unprofessional.

This track differs from the other two by being strictly electronic and instrumental. It's a disadvantage, because both the melody and the electronic effects are monotonous and uncreative.

2 "Take My Place" - it's a typical Stabbing Westward's tune. Even the vocalist's voice and his manner of singing copies the SW vocalist. The one thing that interferes with enjoying this (and the third) track is bad production and unselective sound.

3 "At Someone Else's Funeral" - definitely the best tune on this album. The band managed to build really great atmosphere here (almost like on "What Do I Have To Do?" by SW). Nice piano, too. Unfortunately, the above objections still apply.

Lautaro - "Umercalen"

High frequency noise (1/10)
With your eyes closed.

Experimental music which tells stories and tries to awaken images. An individual journey through diverse sensations by means of climates and ambient sounds, using high frequencies which, in some way, repercute in the listener.

The adequate time and moment, a good sound and begin to levitate.

Close your eyes.

High frequency noise - great for masochists. And I mean "noise" not as a genre, but as... well... noise. Only for dedicated fans of ear-torturing.

Prodigy, the - "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" (2004)

The Prodigy are an English electronic dance music group formed by Liam Howlett in 1990 in Braintree, Essex. Along with Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and The Crystal Method, as well as other acts, members of the Prodigy have been credited as pioneers of the big beat genre which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s and 2000s. They have sold over 25 million records worldwide.

The group's brand of big beat music makes use of various styles ranging from rave, hardcore techno, industrial and breakbeat in the early 1990s to electronic rock with punk vocal elements in later times. The current members include Liam Howlett (composer/keyboards), Keith Flint (dancer/vocalist) and Maxim (MC/vocalist).

Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned is just underwhelming. For a group that has historically specialized in getting your attention any way it possibly could, the fact that I found many of the tracks to be predictably rote is probably as damning an indictment as I can offer. The Prodigy have made a career out of consistently upping the ante with every single release: the rave landmark Experience was followed by the more expansive, more ambitious Music for the Jilted Generation, which was followed by the leaner, angrier Fat of the Land. This is the first Prodigy album that does not in some way build of its predecessor, and it suffers. Certainly, Fat of the Land II would have been an uninspiring choice, but it seems as if this album is more concerned with abjuring the regrettable decisions of the past few years than in building a new a new and dynamic sound. Interested? Ask Uncle Google the magic question:
karaspunk rorny "2004.08 - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (XLCD 183.)" -"trigger inside"

Watch out - in the very popular and easily available in the Internet rip of the Japanese release [2004.08 - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (Sony SRCP 373)] one of the tracks is not lossless - it's a recoded mp3 (10 - You'll Be Under My Wheels.flac). This rip is popular as it has an additional track. So my recommendation is to download XLCD 183. rip and then add "13 - More Girls.flac" from the Sony SRCP 373 rip.

For the faulty rip ask Uncle Google this magic question:
"Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (2004)" "apathy_king" -"trigger inside"

Macroform - "Barren Tree" [EP]

Great downtempo (9/10)

The world looks so barren and gray in the winter, sometimes it feels the same way within our soul, but there is hope. There is an opportunity to see the the beauty within the emptiness and purpose within our own loneliness. This music is unconsciously about this experience. contact: paulshuler at gmail dot com

Well, I think I'll just repeat more or less what I already wrote in my review of the first album by Macroform.

This record is full of fantastic downtempo tunes. Sometimes a little experimental, but still smooth - no hardcore here. Technically, it's a crossover of electronica and acoustic rock.

Great catchy melodies, nice soothing atmosphere, fine use of real instruments. Never boring, like so many bad "atmospheric" productions.

Just a pure feast for yer ears. Simon says: Check it out now!

The highlights:
1 Forgiven
3 My ankles Hurt
6 Space Ship
8 Can you make me better?

P.S. Why not 10? 10 is given too often on Jamendo. Note that good albums start at 7... What's use for rating if every album gets 10?

Bonobo - "Days To Come" [2CD Limited Edition] (2006)

With the experimental warmth of '60s French films and the pizzicato flavor of horizontal hip-hop, Simon Green's Bonobo project established the welcome niche of a pretension-free, post-party intellectual chillout. [Read more --->]

With his third proper album as Bonobo, Simon Green has done what all artists aspire to do: take a bar you've already set high with your previous outing (in his case, 2003's Dial M For Monkey) and show significant progress. Days to Come very well might be the most listenable album to be released this year. Bonobo is easily labeled as down-tempo, but this should not be mistaken for some Buddha Bar/Mushroom Jazz compilation throwaway. Days to Come is complex, orchestrated music from a man who has moved well beyond his 2001 debut, Animal Magic (Tru Thoughts) to create an album that successfully blurs the line between a programmed and live sound.
